What's the best budget shock for use with NB Miata stock springs?

I've used both Bilstein and Koni adjustables on NA's, with stock, Eiback and Flyin' Miata springs, but for this car, I want to retain the stock ride height and keep things affordable.

Suggestions?

KYB AGXs are cheap and cheerful, but I don't know how they're regarded in the Miata community. I do remember hearing that the NB Bilsteins are rather different than the NA ones and would be a good choice. There's also the Koni "STR-T" which I have heard mixed things about.

the mazdaspeed Bilsteins seem to have the best OEM valving, and they're relatively cheap

Also, I wouldn't mind having an extra set of stock springs if anyone has some that they'd like to sell. I want to get this car in an out of the garage quickly, so having four assemblies ready to go would be a huge bonus when it comes time to remove the old ones.

I'd just roll with some NB Bilsteins. They're about $400 for the set.

I'm running Billie HD's with GC bumpers & stock springs on an '01 with FM sways. They're adequate for the job but could use less compression dampening in my opinion.

I have a good set of OEM bump stops (& boots I think) if you want em.

If NA shocks work on NBs, i have a set of KYB AGXs that I let go for cheap.

They have springs but I am not sure whether they are factory or not.

I don't know the answer to that. I know that they have different part numbers, but whether they will work or not...

They'll work.

Were those on the 1990 in your profile?

Yes, they were on that car.

It looks like the AGXs for the NAs are eight way adjustable (knob) and the ones for the NB are four way (screwdriver slot). I'm wondering if there would be a clearance issue if I try to use the ones with the knob on the NB.

In reply to Woody:

There should be no clearance issue that I can think of. When I installed a set of them on my '90 years ago, the knob pointed to the rear of the car.

Made adjusting quite easy. photo Picture053.jpg
