So, I have a 2006 NC Miata grand touring with about 144,000 miles on it. I drive it a lot. Given previous history I expect to do things like breaks every 40,000 in the front and every 80,000 all around. This is the first time that I've had to deal with a slipping clutch in a Miata. This is the third Miata I have earned and a second NC. My first one was an NA and it went through clutch slave cylinders pretty regularly. My first NC lasted up until 124,000 miles before it was totaled. But, I have dealt with slipping clutches in previous vehicles.

Today my traction control came on during spirited exhilaration. Later in the day when I was rowing through the gears pretty quickly, an upshift left my engine RPM higher than normal and then over the course of half a second to a second gently came down to the expected speed. So I'm pretty sure that the clutch is slipping. I'm fine replacing it at some point here soon but if there is a way to get another month out of it before doing so it would be helpful.

This is a six speed car and it looks like Flying Miata only has the happy meal for the five speeds. Am I missing something? Maybe I should just ask Keith directly. And has anybody adjusted the clutch on an NC?

So - further research - the Happy Meal is available.

Am I diagnosing this right? Does anyone know if there is any adjustment in the NC clutch? Once I can make a call, I'll reach out to FM and find out...

At 144k, the clutch is probably just worn out. They are a consumable over the long haul. You can adjust the pedal a little bit if you're not getting full disengagement, but Mazda won't really acknowledge that and it won't solve your problem. There's no adjustment at the pressure plate.

Thanks. FM NC 6 speed happy meal ordered and should be here 7/3 :)

144k is the longest I've ever had a clutch last, so this isn't really a surprise. I got my last NC at 1 year/4K and took it to 124 before it was totaled. This one had an engine teardown & #1 piston replacement (piston was OK, bearing at the crank was shot & clattering when not under load) back around 115k. I'm thinking supercharger next year, so having a suitable clutch makes sense...

Looking forward to the improvement!
