I need to get a new door hung on my car, which means swapping the window regulator, door lock cylinder, door card, and mirror over to the new door, then actually putting it on the car. It's a bit daunting for someone without a garage, so I took it to my local body shop and they quoted me 7 hours of shop labor to get it done. I can see it taking me that long, but is it really something that's gonna require that much effort?
I've found many body shops will just over quote something really high that they really don't want to do.
Basically they don't want the job.
BUT... if some shmuck is going to pay waaaay to much to do it, they'll go ahead and do it.
Shop around.
Try CL and see if you can find a pro looking for side jobs.
I found a great guy this way. He was daytiming as manager at a chain parts store.
Now that he's a service writer at a Chevy dealership he's no longer doing side work.
What about buying a more complete door? Then, no need to swap window. Maybe a second key for door. Change door card optional.
Doesn't sound out of line depending on what car.

Whats the car?
How did you end up with a gutted replacement door?
In your situation I would be worried about a snag that left me with a car that could not be secured for the night while you figure out some issue or source a part.
Your bodyman just wants your to go away with that quote. Its a $200 job if I showed up and did it in your garage.
Ask around at parts stores or car shows for retired guys lookin' for a few easy bucks. Any auto body/ paint shop oughta know a few.
Hanging a new door and swapping the bits over shouldn't take more than a few hours. If you want to stop by one evening we can get 'er done. I'm a few miles south of the Sargent road exit.
