Buddy is gimping a rogue along and the cvt is on borrowed time. Bad enough that it throws a code and carmax only offered them $1500, which would leave them kinda boned.

Anyone know a reputable but affordable shop in austin texas i can send them to with the grm forum seal of approval?

Long time Autocrosser, Dan Pedrosa owns Eagle transmission in Pflugerville:

Not sure how much CVT work he does but is good on standard transmission work.

Funny...I was going to mention Dan.  Got to know him years ago in the Tejas Miata club and John Long's shop.
I haven't seen him in many years but I'd still recommend your friend giving him a call to see what can be done.

When I ran transmission repair shops in Texas, we had a Cottman in Cedar Park and one in Pflugerville, both of which had a very good CVT guy.  Granted, that was 10 years ago.  Steer clear of Transmission King, although I heard they went under for the third time.

Don't be surprised if a reman costs considerably more than a good low mileage used one.  They are stoopid hard to do, so the quoted price has to include multiple R&Rs, trips to Nissan for computer flashing, plus the cursing and swearing fee.  A used one with a warranty is often where we urged customers to lean.

A new one is cheaper than a reman or used one around here, if you want any kind of warranty.
