He has had a major oil blow out during a fly and drive from California. He is located at the rest stop in Sutherland Nebraska. If there is anyone that can help Please call him at any time he is in a vehicle that has no oil and needs tools and oil if possible. Please call him at three one seven seven four eight eight zero six five.
Looks like data roaming working again.
Details: 98 Montero, oil was full just past full mark 94.2 miles ago when i got gas. Had not used or lost any measurable amount in the 1200 miles prior.
Pulled into rest stop for a break. Noticed oil smoke coming from hood when i parked. Did not notice any weird noises or lack of power. No oil on dipstick, but there is some dripping off the back bumper. Oil everywhere on driver's side bottom half of engine bay.
Thinking a line or sender popped, but am woefully underprepared (which is why this happened i'm sure) and can't get the skid plate off to really take a look.
I have 3 quarts of oil with me, enough to find out if the motor is done or not if i can fix whatever caused the leak. My worry is that there isnt much of a trail through the rest stop so i have no idea how long it ran without oil.
North Platt seems to be the closest town, about 16 miles away.
Oh boy.
This link should be map coordinates.

I-80E. Mile marker 158, Nebraska.
If you were on the east end of the state I'd be able to get there and back before I have to work tomorrow night, but you are just too far for a 12-hr turnaround.
If it helps, I'm at zip 57223, an hour north of Sioux Falls, SD, and I have a heated shop and truck/trailer you can use. Nurse it here and fix it up or get yourself here and use my rig to go fetch it, either way you are welcome to my facilities.
One day rental car in north Platte first thing in the morning would get you to my place and back there with my truck, trailer, and your rental on the trailer by midnight Sat. You could get a good nights sleep and still be home Sunday with the Montero on the trailer. Next weekend a day up and a day back to return the truck and trailer and you are out a weekend and $250 worth of gas in my truck, plus the rental car and it's $75 in gas. Consider that the cap for the worst it can get.
Looking around the map at the city of North Platte, it seems the the town offers much of what you need. Right at the expressway exit are multiple hotels, a shopping mall and lots of retail, Walmart. Some auto repair. There is an Advance Auto Parts.
Current Temps are in the 20s.
If you have no shelter, you may want to call The Hyw Patrol. They have a large office at the exit ramp in North Platte. I bet they could get you to a hotel if that's what it takes to survive until daylight.
Non emergency number to Hyw Patrol... 800.525.5555
Do you have AAA?
North Platte is kinda the big town for the area, you should be able to get anything you need there in the morning. Unfortunately it is the coldest weekend of the year to be under a truck on the side of the road.
Thanks guys. I'm gonna grit it out in the truck til daylight. It's cold but not unmanageable. I have some winter gear with me. I want to get a good look at it before i throw in the towel on getting it home under its own power, though nursing it as is is out of the question.
John thanks for the info on highway patrol. Oldopelguy, i will take you up on your offer if i cant get this rolling again i think, i appreciate it!
I'm going to move a mustang this morning with the trailer... you havemy number. it looks like 12 hours so let me know soon! I have to be at work on Monday morning too.
Called you and left a message Bob.
you wait until I go to the crapper (with the laptop)
Perfect timing for me! Timed this all perfectly. Drove through 4 storms, my first catastrophic failure ever, you're pooping, etc...
My addled brain forgot that no oil on stick does not necessarily mean dry engine.
Waiting on daylight, then gonna dump my 3qts in and see if i can drive it into town to a shop.
Need to get it home under its own power if possible. Truck is too tall to fit through a standard garage door.
Does the oil pressure light come on if you turn the key to on but don't start it, and does it go out after you start it? If it does both then you probably are all right aside from the expensive layer of anti corrosion you put on the bottom of the truck.
I sent you my #, give me a call to wake me up if you decide to head this direction.
I agree, in daylight, fill and start. Idle to confirm how quickly it is emptying or if.
Looking at the map, at exit 164, (5 miles away) there is one gas station to the north. That gas station is the only thing there but they should have oil. So, 5 miles to more oil.
If the truck seems like it will make it, EXIT 174 is the really big exit of North Platte. If you exit south, there is gas, new car dealerships and Menards (who sells oil too).
If you go north, the more desirable way, you will enter into the full town with more services.
You might shoot for:
MODERN TIRE PROS
Address
1402 South Jeffers Street
North Platte, NE 69101
Contact
Phone: (308) 532-1213
Only open till noon
Looks to be a tire, lube, muffler, AC service and more type shop.
Big.
From there you could walk one block to Advance Auto Parts or cross the street to Walmart (more oil).
Looks like it was "only" down 1.5qts. Starting it in 5 minutes to see if i can pinpoint leak. Then will call that shop. Thanks John.
Yay! Still on stand-by if needed. It's still 800+ miles home!
In Indiana terms, I would compare the size of North Platte to Columbus, Indiana. Not a huge town but also big enough that you are capable of getting what you need there.
It is the county seat so it is the biggest town around.
This thread helps boost my faith in humanity. Best of luck SFO.
just got a promising call. Y'all should be getting an update soon. Don't want to spoil it!

That must have been one cold night!
Fingers crossed that it is an ea$$y fix.
Loose oil filter. I struggle to get these off most cars and this one just backs out by itself?
Doesnt feelt right when tightening/is a pain to get to because of a skid plate. Heading into town for an oil change.
In reply to Swank Force One:
That's a dodged bullet. Glad to hear is was minor.
