Good to hear its something dumb/simple rather than a blown rear main or something difficult. Good luck with the rest of the trip!
Nice adventure.. please provide a thread once you are home safe. I am glad that the problem was a simple fix.
To put things into context for the crowd...its currently -2F in North Platte. The winter gear might have literally been a lifesaver had this been a dead car in the middle of the night in Nebraska!
Well... I was in the truck for 6 hours overnite, so it was.
Getting a $30 oil change now. Not convinced it had the right filter on it.
My first thought was, not the most popular vehicle, maybe wrong filter.
Remember, if the shop is not sure or does not have in store, Advance Auto Parts is within walking distance.
Awesome. Glad to hear you're not a popsicle and the truck isn't scrap metal. I'm too far away to be of any help but I sure love that this board chips in the way they do.
Next i'd like the GRM Fairy to grant me some 4.90 gears. This thing isn't happy climbing hills. Motor doesnt seem to mind 6000rpm+ though.
Motor doesn't mind 6k till it rattles off the oil filter!
It'll be flatland the rest of the way home!
So, if I understand the whole story, you drove 1200 miles, then the oil filter loosened up? Say, that's odd.
I was just thinking to myself yesterday, Where the Eff is SFO???
Who knew he was sleeping in a Montero somewhere in the frozen wasteland that is Nebraska?
Glad your not a SFOsicle and it seems to not be a major issue. Here is to no more issues on the way home

Like I told him this morning, after the continental divide its (literally) all down hill from there!
Someone tries to reuse a torque-to-yield oil filter? Don't they know that you can't do that?
Glad to hear you're okay and on the road!
