50k Dealer serviced. Owned by an older gentleman that appreciates these cars. Dark/Midnight blue with a medium tan interior. Interior and exterior are 9.5/10. Reason for sale is he just got an 01 740i sport With 30k. Black on black that is like new.
I was not looking but mentioned to him about two years ago that if he ever wanted to sell let me know. Well last. Friday I was filling up my truck and he was filling up his car and he mentioned he may be wanting to sell in the near future and was I think interested. Well of course I said yes as it is by far my favorite year 740 and I really like the color combo.
So what is the value of this thing? I want a price that is fair as I like the seller and will continue to see him on a regular basis.
E38s just don't get the love that the E39s do. My buddy sold a really clean '01 Sport, black on black, full records, for a shade over $5k about 6 months ago. Based on what I see here in Detroit area, that's a $3k car, maybe $3500 because of the low miles.
Seems your guy just bought a really nice '01 740i so he probably represents "current market value". If you can find out what he paid for his current then just make a value judgement down accounting for:
1. What do you feel the price difference should be from the black car's "excellent condition" to the blue car's "very good condition"
2. What value would you put to the items that make a "Sport" vs non-Sport.
Retail they bounce around $5k - $9k with anywhere from 70k to 100k miles. I feel like $5k -$6k is a fair valuation with the miles and maintenance history.

Got proof of any selling for over $6k? Or are you quoting a range of asking prices? The only E38s I see in that asking range, I see for a loooooong time.

I know that there is a vast difference between "selling" and "asking" price. These were "asking" prices. I did find 2 sold examples on Flebay with close to the OP's mileage.
