I need to get a clutch slave cylinder, engine dipstick and front brake pads for my newly acquired '99 Miata. The car will be mostly a commuter car, but will get some autocross use. For the slave cylinder I'm mainly concerned about quality. For the dipstick, I want new, not used, only because I don't have time to go through a junk yard to find one. Summit Racing, which is close to me sells all kinds of Hawk pads for this car, although I've always been partial to Porterfield pads on my other cars. So with that information, what do you all recommend? Also, what oil does the clutch circuit use?

for OEM parts, check out Rosenthal Arlington Mazda, I've gotten a number of pieces off them pretty well.

Slave cylinder, you want the cheap Exedy from Rockauto.

Dipstick, Rosenthal Mazda or Atlantamazdaparts.com, which is a division of Jim Ellis. Do NOT order from the JimEllismazdaparts.com site, as they're substantially more expensive than their other site for some strange reason.

Clutch hydraulics uses brake/hydraulic fluid. I run Amsoil Dot4 in all of it.

Replacing slave is a fun time to get a stainless braided clutch line as well. 5xRacing has them for cheap.

Pads, i'll let someone else answer. I use EBC Yellows or Carbotech XP8s.

Miatas lock up the front first, so get the cheapest OEM-style pads you can buy to help bias it more equally. Tire Rack Stop Tech or whatever they have worked fine. Napa or Centric rotors are great and cheap if needed.

In reply to kylini: exactly.

I went Hawk HPS fronts and HP+ rears and still locks front first (though just barely).

Note that if you've done 2 autoxes in it, you can register for Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development and buy OEM parts online at a steep discount (I think it's at dealer cost). This is awesome. :)
