The Javelin needs mufflers. It's got the original dual pipes to about the back of the doors. Probably 2 1/4", may be 2 1/2".
I want to do side-exit exhaust (each side) a'la old Trans Am racers, but I can live with turn-downs.
What's decent (yet still a little noisy) that I can I slip on there quick and cheap like? Are glasspacks on a pre-smog car too loud? Any drawbacks to angle-burners?
Thanks!
Super turbo mufflers. Get the offset inlet/outlet version for the best flow. Cheap and easy.
Glasspacks will fail and get louder and louder. The stainless steel version last longer.
I run a dual exhaust on a F-100 that both pipes dump in front of the right rear wheel. I run a glass pack on each exhaust. It sounds great. The engine is a 390.
Dynomax Race Bullets... your neighbors will thank you
hey, I saw this in Rod & Custom magazine...

Normally I'd agree, but I want to drive this thing to work in the morning and if I wake the baby I'll be beaten and hung!

second vote for super turbo, they sound great for the price
Dynomax Ultraflow SS are nice I think.
on a v8 can't go wrong with a turbo muffler of some sort...
i really like the summit racing chambered race mufflers. they're flowmaster 40 series knockoffs but sound less tinny.
Same with the Thrush Welded mufflers... they are chambered just like Flowmasters but like half the cost. Most brick and mortar autoparts stores stock them on the shelves.
This gets my vote! I run one on the RX-7, and my neighbors love me! Of course the car also has a turbo, which helps a lot in the area of sound reduction.

Great product! More or less fails on "cheap" though.
Turbo style mufflers will be too quiet. My vote goes to the cheapest chambered muffler you can find. Or glass packs.
Chambered mufflers it is!
I realized that A: my stock pipes are 2 1/4" and 2: they are dented to oblivion, so I chopped them completely off. I'd love to swing headers, too, but that's probably not smart right now. For now I think it will be Summit's chambered mufflers (in 2 1/2") with some turn downs.
I gotta call Rob's Rod Shop first and see what he has. Gotta support the GRM advertisers!
My vote for Hooker Aerochamber. Lot like 40-series down low but better (not as tinny) when revved up.
Thermal Research and Development for me.
Okay, help part 2.
I've heard that Thrush has chambered mufflers that are good, and they run about $35 each. I've never heard them and don't know anybody with them. Anybody here?
Second, the mufflers that are the go-to choice for my family (from the 304 Ambassador to the 11-second N/A 390 AMX) are Hooker Aero Chambers, also a chambered muffler, but with "extras". These run about $70 each. I have heard them (on all the cars), and they do sound amazingly good.
Should I pop for the twice-the-price known goods, or try the half-price unknowns?
(2.5" offset in, 2.5" centered out BTW)
In reply to stanger_missle:
Dr. Gas is no longer a functional company.
I got a Thrush chambered muffler on my Neon. They are about $35-$40. I think it sounds good. It's a Camaro style so it has the dual tips and exits out the rear. has a nice burble at idle and doesn't sound too "ricer"-ish at WOT.
With side exhaust, it's gonna be loud no matter what you put on for mufflers.Turn downs will quiet it down a lil, but not much.
I vote for Thrush.

I put some Thrush mufflers on my cars back in the 1960's so they have been around for a while. They were usually a little on the noisy side but that is what I wanted back then.

Back in the day Thrush mufflers were glasspacks though.
