Well, that was a lot of wasted time. While changing pads and rotors, I discovered a stuck caliper slider pin in the right rear. Pretty common. I tried to get it out, but it was not having it. So I found a caliper for a '97 Miata on Advance Auto's website, called and confirmed that the store had it, then drove 40 min each way to get the thing. I didn't look closely enough at the bracket though and found out when I got home that it was for a 1.6! Scramble some more and an O'Rileys has a bracket about an hour from me. I call a friend who lives in that town and he met me half way with it (I owe him a lot of beer for that), so that saved me an hour of driving time. At least the car is back together, running, and ready for a shake down track day on Tuesday. I still have a lot to do (mostly cosmetic/cleanup stuff), but it is hopefully good to go!
Sorry I'm not build-threading this car. Nothing really special that hasn't been done before, and it's more of getting it ready and reliable for track days than auto-x which the P.O. was doing. That and I've just been thrashing to get it done.
You got burned by someone upgrading their brakes - they bought a 1.8 caliper and handed in a 1.6 as a core.
The pins can be removed from the bracket in case this information is useful in the future. Of course, it's easiest if you can take the caliper off!
In reply to Keith Tanner:
That's what I figured. And yes, the caliper couldn't be removed. The pin was sized in the caliper. Turning the caliper was unscrewing the pin. No way it was going to come out the proper way though. I had to use the pin from the 1.6 caliper (which looked like it was bead blasted clean and not a new pin - I'll be ordering a pin kit too) in the new, correct bracket.
