Oh E36 M3, you just did.....
And yes, capitalism failed as well. But that wasn't in the discussion.
yamaha wrote: The thing that irks me, Socialism failed....period. The problem is that it is unsustainable without constant influx of new populace to siphon off of. A perfect example for this is this country's grand socialist experiment known as Social Security.
no, communism failed.. there are still quite a few socialist countries doing just fine.
And how as Social Security failed? The only reason it is in trouble at all is due to "borrowing" funds from it to prop up other things. If that money had been left in place, it would be doing very well.
Back to the topic at hand. Something else to remember: the guy complaining about the fine knew what he was getting into when he got his license. It is not like Finland just started to put fines like this in place, they have been around a -long- time and everyone is well aware of the consequences of a traffic violation in that country.
Can pay the fine, don't do the crime

At the risk of restating the obvious, I will add. The "right to say it" is what a/this forum is about. If I don't like the forum, I don't participate in that forum. Recently I let my temper get the best of me on forums. So I dropped out and cooled off a few days before I came back.
I think a few posters taking "timeouts" right about now might be a good idea.

Its all good, I'll be too busy tearing down motorcycles over the weekend to give a damn about this discussion.
And mad_machine, pilfering the SS trust fund definitely wasn't smart, but that whole system is unsustainable as designed. We'll be hearing much more about it in the near future to be honest.
Chris_V wrote: berkeleying socialist style envy in this thread. I thought you guys were better than that. Guess not. Why have this pretense of fining rich people more? Why not just take their money outright just because you're jealous of them and don't think they deserve to have it?
You are completely missing the point. It has nothing to do with "He has stuff, let's take it!. The fines are meant to be a deterrent. To equally deter rich and poor alike, the fine is set up to be on a sliding scale.
It is that simple.
This is as opposed to the US, where we may have points systems in place to theoretically treat everyone equally, but this doesn't jibe with the practice of paying a higher fine (double) in order to get no points. Which is where you see people who simply don't give a crap, because they'll just throw money at the problem and keep going. And this is where you see, say, people with traffic rap sheets a mile long and they've never had a suspended license.
