i need to get the hoosiers dismounted from the 944 rims so nashco can have them mounted to the rims for his fiero. cheap = good. free = win.
anyone got a local tire store hookup they wouldn't mind burning a favor with?
NOTE TO GRM: this is coming out of my pocket, not nashco's budget. he bought dismounted tires from me.
I have a cheapo harbor freight manual tire mount/dismount machine. It isn't even bolted down so if you can make it work I am impressed.
Edit-in gville 1 exit from hotel. Heck, I can bring it to the hotel thurs night.
Depending on when you get here, my mechanic on Main Street has a basic machine. He'd probably let you use it for free or would do it for cheap.
if you come through orlando before thursday afternoon i can do it....maybe
I will need some tires installed also, can you post up your guy's address and let him know we are coming (errr...stopping by)
What ever happened to a prybar, spoons, and a hammer? Bob Costas.
Just kidding, but if it comes down to it, it can be done manually. Not fun, but possible.

that sounds like a good bet. we could do it either thursday PM or early Friday AM before going to the track. post his info in this thread and maybe he'll get a bunch of tire-changing business from challengers.

I went buy a local shop and they swapped for free when I explained what it was for.
I just talked to him and he's game. He is thinking $40 per set to mount though, so I'm not sure how that will fit everyone's budget. He is familiar with the Challenge though, so maybe you can haggle him down a little.
Very cool guy, master BMW technician.
His website is: http://www.bestmotorworks.com/, which includes all of the contact information.
I told him late Thursday or early Friday and he said that works well.
Please tell him I sent you guys.

You know if I were there I'd be ready to help with a prybar and a hammer in my hands!

I'm surprised past $200X competitors don't have some place picked out as a regular stop. To think, so many cheapskates with race tires have gathered in the same location for years running...yet nobody has found the guy that will do tires cheap. If we were running Portland, I'd guide you to the shop that will do race tires for practically free if they don't have to lift a car, install valve stems, balance the wheels, etc. Heck, if you're cute enough and catch them on the right day, it is free.
I can swing $40 for the dismount/dismount/mount on the Fiero, but I'll have to have them lift it as I doubt they want me jacking it up and working on it in their parking lot. It'll be a tight squeeze on time if we have to do it Friday morning, I guess we'll play it by ear.

i'm aiming for around 4pm arrival at the host hotel, but could be late by as much as 12 hours, if past performance is any indication of future results.

Not an unreasonable assertion. Part of the issue is that Gainesville is a pretty darn small place. Roughly 250k folks. Portland, on the other hand, is roughly 2.2 million and has a really nice race track.
Are you in Gainesville now?

Nope; I will be at the host hotel around 10 pm tomorrow night if I'm lucky and everything goes according to plan (knock on wood).

Gotcha. I'll PM you my phone numbers, just in case you need help between here and Orlando or once you arrive.
Back to the tire issue, my guy runs a very low key operation. I don't think he'd care at all if you were jacking it up in the parking lot yourself. He also might throw it up on the lift just to make it faster though.

FWIW, most have the foresight to buy and mount their tires before they leave home.
Unfortunately the Gainesvillians who are on here are not serious racers. Most of us are car fans who became challengers. I think suprawess probably has the most autocross miles of the bunch. From some of his previous posts, I don't get the impression he is a guy who is swapping on new tires all the time.
