My next project on my '93 Ranger is to extend the I beams for a wider track. The goal is to set the front track width a total of 6" wider (3" per side). I've been using heavy steel Soft 8s with 4" backspacing.
The plan is to extend each I beam more than 3" (let's say 4") and find a light, strong 15x8 alloy with (let's say) 5" backspacing. In theory, this will reduce scrub radius while saving bearings, better braking stability, etc.
Now I just need to find the right wheel. I'm thinking older oem mustang stuff. Any input is appreciated!

Any of the front drive and FRS+BRZ, think honda acura Mitsubishi . Lots of 5 x 114.3 out there with a 35-50 offset. It's what fits my fox chassis with SN95 axles and SN95 spindles.
Mustang wheels are always cheap.

Given your application, I wonder if you might be well served by looking at steel racing wheels. That way you will have high strength for a reasonable price. http://www.diamondracingwheels.comFor instance, these guys appear to let you select the bolt pattern and back spacing: They might even be a GRM sponsor.
The widest OEM Mustang wheel in 15 inch was 7 inch. Even the 16 inch ones were no wider. Only once they offered 17 inch wheels did OEM Mustang wheels go to 8 & 9 inch wide.
I think that the after market is where you're going to have to look.
You mite find used stock car wheels on a racing parts website.

There is much to be said for wide steelies. Check the roundy round dirt track forums for great deals on used wheels. It may be worthwhile to simply pop for new ones though at around 400 a set for exactly what you want on offset, pattern, and finish.
