I haven't looked at full size trucks in a while, but I was recently helping a friend find a new truck and was astounded at the level of engine options and trim packages. Yes, we all can complain about how expensive they've gotten, but it's interesting to see what a really competitive market segment does to a product. I also was surprised to learn how many diesel options there were. I also realized that a 5000lb truck gets 2x the fuel economy of my 12 year old bmw, and premium is more expensive than diesel in my area.
Guess I should sell my B3000 and find an extra $40k laying around.

The diesel 1/2 ton silverado only got launched in the past few weeks. I'll be curious to see if Chevy hits that market better than Ford. Ford screwed the pooch on it by only putting it in upper trim level trucks and so people who might have been interested were priced out of it. My dealer buddies said they have moved like molasses.
Heck, it gets better gas mileage, more power and tows a bit more than my 1993 Silverado K2500 6.5L TD. Mine is paid for, though.

"As on most trucks, the diesel doesn't come cheap. The turbodiesel option adds $3,890 to the cost of mid-trim LT and RST models that come standard with the turbo-4 and $2,495 to the base price of high-end LTZ and High Country models, which come standard with a 5.3-liter V-8. The turbodiesel is not available on lower trims."
It's basically the same price as upgrading to the 6.2L gasser, which has the same tq, but about 150hp more than the little diesel, and requires less maintenance, cheaper fuel, and no emissions related hassles for the weekend warriors that use them as commuters during the week.

Being available on an LT puts it a lot closer to the Affordable trucks than the F150. The F150 couldn't get the diesel on anything below the Lariat in 2018 (unless you were a fleet customer) and Ford offered almost no incentives on the trucks.
I went and checked, and Ford fixed that for 2019 and it's available on the XLT F150. So looking at what LT trucks run from Chevy they should both price in the Mid-low 40's. With incentives. Possibly lower.

Yeah I still don't understand why they did that
I work on this engine package at GM, it's a very smooth powertrain, great torque delivery. As others have said see if Diesel makes sense for your drive cycle.

I'm curious what it gets in real-world. On one hand, the 2.7L GM trucks got worse mileage than the V8 trucks in the hands of the public, while making less power and requiring premium fuel. On the other hand, their diesel Equinox/Terrains were rated at 39mpg highway and I've seen them get as high as 56mpg in the right hands, and most seem to average in the 45-48mpg area/

Too bad it's so ugly.
That seems to be a serious issue too, from what I've seen. The new Chevy trucks are selling horribly. Like, slid to third in sales behind Ram.

The GMCs look good imo, so there is that option.

I talked to a customer of mine who had the newer dodge diesel 1500, i want to say he was getting low to mid 30’s for mpg. I think he said he still got 30 towing his 24’ fishing boat. It was a steel wheel havin fleet truck too.
So 33mpg if driven right is probably doable.
But yeah the new cheby’s are butt ugly. Wings and lips and crap all over. Co-worker has one as his company truck, he says all the crap on the front whistles at speed.
