Oh boy, here we go!

I've been mulling over getting a new car for quite some time, what with being out of school and being in a field that is relatively in demand. At first I thought I would just get a small personal loan with a bank and buy a ~4 year old car that had depreciated in value a lot. Unfortunately, with being recently out of school plus jumping jobs, my bank wasn't really interested in loaning me money without a co-sign. NOT gonna happen

So, when I was in Edmonton yesterday shopping for a place to rent (I went from graduating in Edmonton during April, to Red Deer for a month working for the city, to Calgary for a month working for Westburne Electric, and now I am going back to Edmonton to work for the Alberta Research Council), I thought I'd stop by the Hyundai dealership. If I was to buy a new car, it'd have to be as cheap as possible, and nothing says cheap like Hyundai!

Long story short, as long as my comprehensive insurance comes in under $150/month I'll be the proud owner of a 2010 Accent Sport. But thats not the whole story, I learned some interesting things!

  1. Go near the end of the month. Quotas have to be filled and they want to sell you a car.
  2. Be prepared to spend some time there. My strategy of act pumped at first and then waffle near the end seemed to work well. It took a total of 3 hours, but buying anything forever $5k is a huge commitment.
  3. Be aware of what you are commiting to when "signing" for the car: in Alberta, you can cancel the contract (actually, any "direct sale contract") within 10 days of signing, as long as you haven't physically taken the product. By law, they are required to return ALL of your money, including "deposits".

Also, if you do not take immediate delivery of the car make sure to double check they aren't jewing you for the price of the car. I have to double check a couple of things, but I'll simply take my business elsewhere if they try to pull any slimey tactics with me.

So, the car is a sport (like I said) 5 speed manual in bright red for extra cop-attracting-points. Its basically a full load (I was forced to get a sunroof with the "sport" model, WTF?!), pretty decent looking car for $16,500 all in (including taxes and what not). I am going to be picking up a set of sideskirts/front valance/rear valance for it that was only available on a special edition model released in Canada for 2007 (the Accent SR, which there were 500 made). Other than that, I am now going to take a break and let myself soak in the debt for a while

I can think of more eloquent ways to say that. But good luck with your purchase.

Yikes, $150 / month for insurance on an Accent? The ONLY financial advantage to being old, in this case, would be that my insurance is about $50 / month for a somewhat nicer, tho not brand new, car..

You don't say how you are financing this car, whether it's through the dealership or if you pre-arranged your financing. I've been told for years that it's a VERY good idea to get pre-approved at your bank or credit union (mine, both offer about 5% APR on new cars) BEFORE shopping for a car. Then you know exactly how much you can afford to pay and you aren't at the mercy of the dealership F& I people.

There are 1 or 2 dealerships near me that advertise they will complete the buying/selling process for a new car in under an hour....though I'm not sure how happy anyone is with the results(not sure I want to try it, either)..

I just ordered a 2011 Fiesta. I priced it out on the Ford site. Checked the trade in value of my 2002 Liberty. Got in mind about how much I was willing to pay. After a little back and forth, the sales manager gave me a figure. It was close enough. So the order was placed. Six to eight weeks. QED

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay? I am really looking to keep it at $250/month or less, and Ford couldn't even come close it seemed. I'm not in the rush to get a car, I just need it before winter.

I know you're in Quebec, so there may be some differences, but it should be similiar (rather than how cheap they are down in the states).

As for the jew comment, it was a joke! I can't imagine what you guys thought of the one family guy episode about jews and money And just because, I am now going to dress up like Hitler when I first get the car and post a picture of me sitting in it

Basically, there isn't enough room to negotiate on the price. I was just stating that it pays to keep in mind what MSRP is, and what you are getting the car for.

Ill also WTF at insurance.

I picked up a 2010 MazdaSpeed3 last week, just got off the phone with my insurance company and full coverage is coming in around $65/month. Next month once the fiancée and I are married, it will drop to $55/month.

i was referring to the jew comment as well.

the difference between your post and the Family Guy episode is that FG is clearly a joke, and was funny besides. nothing in your post indicated that you used that term in any sort of joking manner, and in any case, it wasn't anything close to funny. huge difference.

Poor attempts on my part indeed

The good news is, I'm no longer buying the Hyundai. The even better news? Fairly decent shape 2000 2.5RS 4 door for $4k (can you say LSD?!)

I'm not ballin' enough to afford an STi front and center diff from Subaru racing yet. All in good time. For now, my first rally-x with this car should be July 31st if everything goes according to plan...
