Hey, if your 40th birthday was coming up, would you want her to go out and surprise you with a new car?

If she just uses the D80 in Auto mode all the time, it's probably no big deal to migrate to a new camera body, and it will probably even take better pictures in at least a couple scenarios. But if she uses it in P mode, like I use my Nikons, the decision on what to get next is pretty personalized.

Fair comments. This is a nudge and encouragement for her and her only real hobby outside of being mom. The swap to a $100 used D80 body would totally solve the actual issue.

She expressed interest and frustration that her D80 was down and asked me to get it sorted. I'm hoping to blow her mind with a new toy and give a nudge to her on something she really loves to do.

Just back from a business trip and will be quietly researching and shopping over the next week.

Side note, I would love to get her to buy me car goodies as she would nail it. She was super excited for my last couple of random car finds. We're dorks like that...

With the assistance of the hive the search is narrowed to two contenders.

I'm leaning toward D7200's used with complete setups. This is likely enough camera and gets her into a modern rig and glass ready to rock for ~700.

The runner up with more potential and more price is the D750. Looks like 1200-1300 and need to watch for a fresh lense to make full use of the potential. There may be some deals if I can wait a few days.

Picked up a D750 with lens and a few other bits 1 year old and in good shape for $1,375 delivered. It has a low shutter count and looked good in the pics. We'll see if I made a wise choice on a used rig or not. Given how short all the warranties are (90days to 1 year) I couldn't justify buying new.
