I will bet it was all stereod up as well.
Yes it seems they had some shorter drift tires and wheels on it.
I hope they had gap insurance
That was my first thought- its probably the ghetto rigg'd neon underbody kit or the indiglo boost gauge or the 200 watt sub kit.
I went to lots and lots of drift events when I was in the scene and I mean no offense... but drifters are a ghetto lot.

I wonder if there was an aftermarket FMU or pressure gauge involved... I know a guy who lost a nice Mustang from a faulty hose connection on a Vortech FMU.
Wow, that sucks for the owner of that car! Made for quite the show for everybody else there though haha
What I had heard was it was a shop car. Was pushing close to 450whp and they had just installed a new fuel system to handle it. One of the lines burst, spraying 93 octane fuel everywhere.
A quick google search found the information that that is actually the cars second engine, and it also had another minor fire when the first engine exploded. One interestiing thing they said was that when the engine broke a rod, the driver tried to shut it down, but the car cant be turned off unless it is going 0 mph. If thats true, how is that a good idea?
Bob, Travis, can you post the links please? A lot of us are interested in buying a Genesis and if the issue is an OE issue versus a TUNER issue it can help us to decide to run or not.
Engine before:
Not exactly stock anymore. I woudl say this is a builder issue, not an OEM issue. Considering Rhys Millen's V6 (which is actually the Lambda V6 that broke the pike's peak record) has no such issues. I would say someone needs to get their build together.... but that;s just me. Also consider Hyundai has never had "fire issues" in the past, and this is not their first turbo car.

Wow--so the "shop" just ate 30 grand. Ouch.

I didn't see it as him calling the cause of the fire necessarily a "factory issue". He just said none of the components they installed were the cause. Damaged or improperly fastened/routed fuel line is as likely a cause as anything especially when dealing with one-off modifications.
^ Correct. Shop practicing a little CYA. They had boosted the stock engine to 344whp before they destroyed the stock shortblock. They were on the new built engine and pushing more power. So I'm sure the fuel system had to be modified.
Well since im friends with one of the guys at the shop and was attending the drift event it was a freak accident that could happen to any car on the road. It was using that stock premolded fuel line and it cracked spraying fuel all over the engine bay and well i guess the video sums it up pretty well. To make matters worse as the fire spread it shorted out the ignition system which caused the starter and fuel pump to engage spraying more fuel onto and already bad situation. As far as the wheels on the rear they were micky tompsons that they were going to use for the drifting and no there was no "system" in the car. It sucks that this has been turned into bad publicity for the shop but I guess that happens when you're one of the first shops out there to work on a brand new car. At least they have insurance and they should have another one back in the shop that I'm sure there will be some modifications to the fuel system to say the least. The most important thing is that no one was hurt and no other cars were damaged, after all its a car and insurance can replace that. Dan

Tell the builders they are VERY welcome on this board.
Whenever we see any carnage some of us start using our little peon CSI minds theorizing.
Any other information on that project would be helpful.
Its good that they had insurance on it. I agree that stuff like that can happen when you modify cars that much. Imo, even unmodified newer cars are a major fire hazard compared to older ones. A 60s carbed car or truck wouldnt ever burn like a brand new one can if something goes badly wrong like that.
Yeah and the whole under hood was lined with asbestos to handle the fire if one was to start in the 60s.

All cars burn. My 66 Caprice went up in seven minutes versus the 97 Ranger took 12.
