Seems that the new numbers might be out

If you trust Jalopnik's "journalism" its going to have 155hp and 148lb-ft and weigh 2200lbs
If I could afford a brand new car, I would really be considering it.
Cue inevitable whining from the internet. It could have had 250 hp, there would have been inevitable whining from the internet.
I'm waiting to see what the car's actually like, I'll judge from there. And I know a guy who likes to make them faster.
Its numbers are slightly better than the Fiesta ST according to poster over there, and I think that car is pretty darn fun. With RWD, it will be a blast to drive, screw the whiners.
If it's really 2200 pounds, it'll be a blast. I just hope I fit in it. Buying a brand new car then immediately tearing out the seats is not high on the list of things I want to do, and isn't even on the list of things SWMBO will let me get away with.
Cue whining from Miata.net, the people who love the 1.6 miata that weighed.... what's that? About 2200lbs and made.... 47.9whp or whatever it is those turds make?
Only 100 or so pounds heavier than my '97 which puts down a ground shaking 115 hp at the rear wheels. Yeah, 155 ponies really should be enough to more than get one into trouble.
Having just drove my father's 2014 Mazda 3 6spd manual w/ 155hp I think the miata will be a riot.
R&T drove it and was pretty happy. They confirm 2200 lbs, which is a lot less than I'd expected. I was anticipating more like 2400.

Hey, GRM, when you get your hands on one, I'm happy to swing by and put in my two cents
There are some cars you don't like the looks of at first, that you warm up to later. For me this is the opposite of one of those cars.
Did it always have the Lamborghini-esque hood shut line? And if you use your hands to make a play-telescope and look at the front quarter area around the wheel and headlight, you'd swear you were looking at a car designed by Chris Bangle.
The car is technically brilliant which only makes the disappointing looks more upsetting to me.
Since I use my Miata for back road cruising at 50-60 mph, 155 horses ought to be more than enough. It's at least 10% more than my current ride.
Sure, I'd like more power, but 155hp in a 2200 lb car shouldn't be that bad. Most LBC's back in the day had 100hp at best right? The styling looks bang on to me. (the NC was fugly). Now to find a way to get rid of that screen in the dash....
Best of luck... (avoiding the complainers) As long as the torque curve is(looks) more like a table, and less like a conehead, it should be pretty fun...
now in no way am I equating my cars handling to a 2015 Miata... but I'm in that 2200# area, and I'm pushing 170hp... but with 15#/ft LESS torque. So... again as long as that torque curve is more flat then curved... it should put smiles on faces

I like it. It is less HP than my MSM. I want to see one in person, but I think I like the looks.
I'm warming up to the looks. I get the feeling that it doesn't photograph well, once I can walk around one and drive it I'll be able to make up my mind. I applaud Mazda for returning to their lightweight roots.
I like the looks. Nothing about them bothers me. To each their own. R/T article it will weigh slightly more than 2205lbs it weighs with the 1.5 with the 2.0 motor in it.

That's not so much Jalopnik's journalism, as it is driving.ca's journalism. While they may or may not be correct, it's far from official enough for me to believe yet.
Also consider that the new Miata also has a 7500rpm redline, where as the 155hp engine in the Mazda 3 has a 6800rpm redline. That last 700rpm would be quite a disappointment if the engine hasn't been uprated from the Mazda 3 spec at all, and the driving.ca report indicates no such falling flat on its face in the upper rev range. So it kind of makes me want to call 'shenanigans' on these 155hp claims...Of course I did the same thing on the GT350 getting a flat plane crank too, and we all know how that worked out.
Not that a few hp either way matters much once I get behind the wheel. At that point it's simply a matter of how big of a smile it does, or doesn't, put on my face.

I thought it looked better in person than in photos, largely because the pictures are done from a lower angle than I view the car standing near it. It's not "OMG' beautiful, but it a very, very nice looking car.

It would be better with a rotary...
With those power figures, it will probably still only require 87 octane. That pleases me.
I think they look great in person. And it's a whole lot easier to add power than it is to pull weight from a car without compromising it, so that makes for a better base for modification.
I want to feel the character of the new engine. I've always found the MZR in the NC to be fairly bland, the old BP was more interesting. Hopefully this one will have some sparkle to it. Lots of compression is a good start.
Ok just read the article. Sounds like they gave it the full Skyactive treatment. I like.
