New project: Volvo PV544

I just got home with a Volvo PV544. It doesn't have an engine or transmission, I am still deciding what I want to put in. I am thinking of a 2.3 turbo from a 740 or 940 or maybe a DOHC turbo from an 850 if it would fit. It originally came with a B18 and the B20 drops right in. Here are some pictures from the PO

There are two or three of these in my city that seem to still be daily driven. They all have a lovely patina to them, and I want one every time I see one. They're so much smaller than they appear in pictures.

A co-worker of mine has one of these cars. He just gotten it back from a shop that got it running after it had sat for years. A previous owner used to use it to plow. It think his has a B-18. I too love them.

I had one of those (a '63) years ago and loved it to death. There was one locally that ran a 2.8 Ford in it. The guy had a sticker on the fender that read "Powered by Fjord"

I recognized the photos from the PO. That car was for sale for quite some time. Congrats on the buy.

I'd stick with Volvo...the basic 2.3 from the 240/740 can be tuned very well in NA or turbo'd form.

Saw one a few years ago that had a super sweet B2300 motor dropped in it, all emissioned, fuel injected, the works. The only compromise the owner made was to drive the A/C compressor off of the rear end, so the A/C only blew cold air when the car was moving.

What does it weigh with no motor?

Not sure on the weight with no motor, with the original motor it is 2250.

it's a narrow engine bay, so forget a 90-degree V-anything unless youbuild a tube frame. The 2.8 Ford 6 or the 2.8-3.4 GM 6 will be a fit, but be careful of steering shaft/exh. mani. interference.

Damn near any I-4 will fit, there's a lot of vertical space. If you want a turbo, you might hafta flip the manifold over and put the turbo up high.

Hmmm... I wonder if a Volvo diesel will fit. Were those fours or sixes?

Does anyone know of a place to get newer Volvo diesels in the US. Like the JDM import sites. I was reading about the D5 engines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_D5_engine) but I don't know of anywhere to get one.

I thought about lsx but as mentioned before the engine bay is very narrow, as are the frame rails and I'm not totally convinced I want to start chopping up the frame.

good point, it's just that LSx is the standard answer to "what engine" as Miata is to "what car".
