Word is the 2015 STi will debut at the NAIAS (Detroit) in January. Thats an internet rumor so..........well you know.
Meh. I'll try to make this as objective as possible, considering my last WRX left a rather sour taste in my mouth.
Where the concept looked amazing, this just looks like they gave up halfway through designing it and called it good. The rear of the car looks like they didn't even try. The front overhang is ungainly, and the wheels themselves look too small and tucked too far in.
A lot of people are complaining about the CVT being available. Who cares? You can get a manual too. They are also FINALLY offering a 6MT. One of the biggest complaints I had about my 2009 WRX is that it needed an extra gear on the highway. They fixed that problem. Also, the interior looks like a big improvement over the cheap previous generation interior. That old interior was creaky, crappy, and fall-aparty.
One big improvement (at least on paper) is that they may have finally found a way to increase the mediocre gas mileage. The new car is rated for 28mpg highway with the 6mt (the CVT is actually only rated for 25mpg highway, another reason not to click that box). If this is an achievable number, that is pretty decent for a 260+hp AWD turbo performance car.
Also, there's no hatch/wagon variant slated for the US. DUMB. No wagon/hatch, no sale for this guy.

In my experience, almost every car that had both a 5 and 6 speed gearbox, 6th in the 6-speed wasn't higher than 5 in the 5-speed (at least not by any signficant amount). It's always just closer ratios for the rest of the gears.
The only exception I can think of for this is the 5 and 6 speeds paired with the Toyota ZZ motors, but in their case the higher 6th is negated by a lower final drive.

Thanks for putting my exact feelings about the looks into words. Also, get out of my head!!!

That's what happens when you have to have the entire engine and part of the transmission in front of the front wheel centerline.
There is no way to make that look good, but I still bought a '12 WRX.
I agree, that the hatchback is a more appealing car, and that it seems dumb to not bring it here.

what? The final drive on the 6MT is the same as the 5MT, so your highway cruising will be at the exact same RPMs with the current 5MT and 6MT. The 6MT just has shorter gearing.
Personally, I much prefer the 5MT to a 6speed. The 2.5 has more than enough power/torque to not need the extra gear. I love shifting, but not that much. There's a reason that the current WRX is a hair quicker than the current STi in the 1/4 mile: 1 less shift to get there.

I routinely get 27-28mpg in my 09 when cruising at around 70mph on long trips. And that's been the case for 90k miles now, on many long, long road trips, with mileage measured at the pump, not on the trip computer. I average 24mpg on mixed tank in DC traffic, and I have a very heavy foot.
6mt again has nothing to do with it though, since its the same final-drive as the 5MT (assuming its the same ratios as the current one) The smaller engine probably gives the mild economy increase.
Totally agree with you on the half-assed "styling" though.....it's totally "meh."....looks like a weird mini-legacy with a body kit.
If there's anything wrong with the WRX it's that it's not terribly exciting. I know that the STI is supposed to be the super cool one, but isn't the WRX supposed to make your heart race at least a little bit with lust?
Interior looks great (can I get the high end headlights and nav system without the leather?).
Front end looks awesome IMO.
Wheels and rest of car = Camry. It's like Subaru said "we'll go ahead and take care of the front end, throw a forester dash in there, gussy up the interior a bit, and just let toyota do the rest."
I'm completely unimpressed. Especially with no option of a hatch :(. Could care less if CVT was an option or not; but, it looks like I'll be keeping my Civic for now unless the new Mustang wows me or the pricing on the Z/28 is feasible.

That's the point of the wrx... always has been!
I like the front of this car but the rest i just don't hate. I think it looks better than the current car.
I wonder how what this 2.0 will rev like in the STI. Would be great if it's like the jdm sti. The ultimate in awesomeness would be if the engine in the STI it some rally homologation 1.6l that revs all kinds of crazy.

Then you realize it's like $24,000 and you get awd and turbo along with a manual trans. If it was $35k i would agree with you but it's not. It's first job out of college prices. People that age always tell me they like the car, in fact coming onto base 5 minutes ago the gate guard told me "i like your car". Most young people view the WRX the same as they viewed a DSM in the 90s.
I'm wondering if this is really a 260hp this time. The last/current wrxs got the same whp on cobbs dyno as the STI

ugh i'm not interested if it has that same engine. It better have forged internals or something.
weird that it has torque vectoring now. their last solution was "remove all the lsds"

What is today's alternative? Nobody makes this type of car anymore aside from Subaru, and if they do make it it's FAR worse (Golf R) or nearly twice as expensive (CLA45 AMG)

this article has a lot of detail
the so called "torque vectoring" is a brake system, not an actual torque vectoring system like in the Evo, lmao. Well I guess thats the same as the WRX now and you shouldn't expect much on a $25k car.

Unfortunately there really isn't one
I've been holding out hopes that the SVT Dart may have AWD but I think that's dreaming.
It would be nice to see Kia or Hyundai step into this game but I bet it would be identical price and car since the Veloster turbo is almost WRX prices.
The problem is everyone who makes a car in this segment has abandoned AWD.
