Yeah, you put tranny fluid in the turret, but it doesn't go on into the transmission. I think it's possible for the shifter to leak into the transmission, but that's gonna take a long time to fill it up.

And yes, the 5-speed has the Jesus bolt and the exhaust pipe / fill plug issue.

Use of eyeballs and common sense is required when assessing whether a trans can be filled from shifter.  I guess this all just comes down to how interested you are in the sometimes painful process of learning. I started out with curiosity and ended up with a bakers dozen of industry certs and 2 related degrees and teach it for a living because i never got tired of it, or what i call 'the deep end'. There's a middle ground where it makes sense to farm some things out because you're not going to get the right combination of money saved and enjoyment from the process and potential to reuse whatever you're learning.  If you're not going to have any fun and you're not going to reuse what's learned, might as well farm it out. I personally like working on miatas more than i like driving them so if i were local to you I'd be pitching to get the job. If you like driving your miata more than you like working on it you might get a hell of a value out of paying someone ~$350 for this labor.

My son and I put a clutch in his miata earlier this year. First clutch for me since 1977 (1967 Chevy II SS with a non-hydraulic clutch), first for him ever. Not too terribly bad. Get the plug from FM to keep the trans fluid from running out of the tailshaft, and don't buy a cheap clutch. My son purchased a cheap clutch on ebay, pressure plate was defective and had to do the job twice. But given a choice, I'd pay someone else to do it, and we had access to a two-post lift.

Nice to hear.  I ordered the FM kit today.   My guy is booked out two weeks. It will be nice to let it be someone else's worry!

In my world we call this "SEP"; "somebody else's problem." I know I learned this from Douglas Adams, but I can't place the reference.

It was an invisibility field used by the flying bistro in either the second or third book in the Hitchhiker's Guide series.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”
