A friend of mine is thinking about dumping his Integra and pondering a newer S40. Anybody around here have one or have some feedback about them?

No, only the first gen S40's (pre-2005) were auto only. You can get the newer ones with a stick, paired with NA or Turbo motors, and even AWD.
My brother had a V50 T5 AWD manual-tranny. It was a great driver, good torque and could haul goods when needed. I find them a bit on the small side, but if I was coming from an Integra that wouldn't be the case.
Not an S40, but my mother had a ~2000 C70 drop top and I was really disappointed with the quality. There were exposed wires in several places(under the seats, etc) and the car drove like ass. It had really low mileage and had been well mantained. She had several problems with the car, including the top getting stuck while it was opening. Ever since that car I have been a little skeptical about the quality of newer volvos.
