A relative has offered me a 2000 frontier with a bad engine,

Looks like it has a VG33, they said it had a bad overheat and now has no or poor compression,

They also said it had disappointing performance when it was new and running good, LoL

Can the VQ series swap in fairly straight forward or would I  be stuck with the VG series
?

I never spoke Nissan, but wouldnt mind another project on my plate if I wind up with a fun driver.

Sounds like a VK56 swap is in order for a fun truck

The 00' Frontier is the generation before the one that accepts the VK and LS swaps easily, think updated 90s hardbody.

What might work is finding a 2001-04 Pathfinder or QX4, same old chassis but with a VQ from the factory.  If you can find one that still exists, it might have a price tag of $0.99 by now.  I haven't seen a runner in years.
