Good lord, who intentionally does this? And who cares if he was in a nice car or not.

It’s pathetic that these excuse for humans like this exist. A number of years ago in Edmonton  we had a school bus driver die in similar circumstances when a large boulder was dropped on the bus he was driving.

You have to wonder what people (likely kids) are thinking. Years ago a friend was driving his '71 Volvo 1800E home from a car show and the nose of the car was hit with a pumpkin thrown from an embankment. Dented the body a bit, but fortunately didn't hit the windshield.

I feel like the rocks or other objects from overpasses thing happens every few years, and it's utterly horrifying every time.

Is there even the remote possibility it came from a vehicle/truck crossing the bridge?

Ya I know not likely.

It happened here in Michigan too.

IIRC the teens in this case were caught because they decided to go to McDonald’s after throwing the rock.

Happened to me many years ago on RT 8 in Ansonia CT. Kids were throwing rocks from side of highway. The moment the windshield shattered with a loud bang I realized why there were several cars pulled over a couple hundred feet ahead. Speed limits were 55 back then and I'd lifted and moved over to left lane when I saw the cars ahead pulled over. Safety glass was really appreciated.

It happened just before 5am. Not the time of day I would've guessed.

It does happen more often than that, but not all incidents are fatal.

I would guess it is the mentally ill about half the time. Check out this article from Austin which is about 1hr north of me.

Clearly in good mental health.

Also, I don't feel that the term mentally ill is exclusionary to teenagers. Just for the record.

Happened to my friend Cormac in Belfast back in the early 90s. Religiously motivated. Took a year to relearn everything. Driver of the cab had to have his eyeball taken out of its socket to clean up the glass. Then his brother was killed by a joyrider in the early 2000s. sad

In some instances public execution should be a thing.

As for what actually happened and what the true cuase was do we really know? My first guess would have been teenagers but at 5 AM? Same goes for mentally ill homeless person.

Till I here more I'm not condemning anyone or speculating.

Per the news report, the DOT said the chunk of concrete was once part of a curb not part of the highway near the bridge.  It's possible the chunk bounced out of a truck carrying debris.

If they’re kids, they’re not thinking. The part of your brain that assesses risk doesn’t fully develop until you’re in your 20’s.

Without one kid in the group to go “No way, man. That could berkeleying KILL someone,” stuff like this happens.

I feel fortunate that my buddies and I didn’t lose life or limb growing up. We all did some REALLY dumb E36 M3.

My parents had a hockey puck thrown at their Suburban / trailer from an overpass in Massachusetts years ago.  For such a small object, it did some significant damage.

I think that some small fraction of the population would enjoy sneakily murdering people for the lulz but merely lack the tools to do it. A rock dropped from an overpass is one such tool. A high-powered laser pointer that can be pointed at aircraft cockpits is another.

If it was thrown, it should be a murder charge.  If it was unsecured cargo, it should be manslaughter.

It amazes me that people don't comprehend that anything thrown off a bridge is wrong. Even if not deadly it is going to cause harm to someone they don't even know.  20+ years ago it was happening often enough that they put up special fencing on all the highway overpasses around here. Hope they find the culprit and string them up.
