Friend did that last night. Brand new bottle, 1150psi. '97 Civic Coupe, K20Z1, wiseco 12:1 pistons, Kelford cams. 240whp on motor. 330whtq on spray. Luckily he has a spare block. I think he's doing pistons AND rods this time around. It was a pretty stupid fast car for the month or so it's been back on the road since the pistons/cams/tune. Trapped at 106mph on motor. As soon as he hit the gas it let go. We're thinking it's the rod bolts/big end that broke.

Yeah I never get the "I got 800 hp out of a stock block Honda." That's like saying you got a lot of energy out of a hand grenade...

Honestly i'm surprised it let go at those power levels...

Someone tried to tell me a D16 with boost will make 400hp all day long.

Sure thing, buddy. Let's put it on an engine dyno and park it at peak HP for a few minutes. I'll even let you run full-loss cooling from the city water supply.

+1 the k swapped hatch that runs around here is trapping way higher. No nitrous though. did he break it with detonation or cylinder pressure?

Yeah, i'm thinking a bad tune. That's not a big shot of nitrous for a K series.

Darn. I was hoping for something memorable involving a 3/4 ton 4WD GM truck.

Wouldn't 12:1 compression + nitrous pretty much call for a near perfect tune, at least on a stock block?

Most aftermarket parts might as well be stock when we're talking about detonating on a big nitrous shot. You cant really build anything to hold that that doesnt end up with a redline similar to a big diesel engine.

In reply to Vigo:

The trick is not to detonate. Spraying the little revvy Honda a 100 shot at a lowly 4500 RPM probably contributed.

Definitely. That's why i think talking about what was stock and what wasnt is a red herring.

K20z1 rated at 210 from the factory....240whp with a good tune should be safe. Did he have to do timing changes when running the NOS? Was YO Vtec enabled at stock 5800rpm? Did he spray it wet? High volume, high pressure new fuel pump installed? detonation is a bitch!

Yeah, I remember the hot rod magazine article where they kept feeding a junkyard smog headed small block chevy with a wet kit on a dyno till it finally blew. It blew prematurely when having neglected to put in a purge noid, they were purging it though the injector with something like a 300 shot, at idle.

They must have done it twice or something. The one I read had they up to something around 300-350 and the engine would start backfiring on nitrous. They traced the problem to the factory cam was too small and the cylinders still had burning charge in them when the intake valve opened...

tuned by Corey at Slomotion Motorsports in Columbus, OH. We're thinking it was a combo of multiple things going wrong, but mainly from load in gear- he's thinking the rod bolts let loose or something. It's been raped on pretty hard the past month since the build, super strong, no issues until that one hit, sees spray about 75% of the time. It was tuned nitrous first, then N/A. Wet kit, one nozzle. Runs strictly E85, I think on a Walbro 255, FIC 750's(thin style). I think Corey set the crossover at 6000RPM... it had a REALLY smooth power delivery. Kelford B cams. He lives about 30 min from me, the car's at a friend's shop right now. Won't really know what caused it until we can get it back to his place and tear into it. Kind of a bad weekend for him, he got laid off, killed a slick, and the bottle went empty Friday, then Saturday something lets go. He's sitting pretty good $ wise so he's not worried about that at all. Has a DD Diesel Jetta. This was just a fun street car.

A coworker has a Teg GS-R with a bonafide 600+ HP on a stock block. He's been DD it for the past 3 years and drag racing it almost weekly in the summer.

Big end still attached to the crank Head still looks good. Couple of small nicks/scratches, but its otherwise pretty good looking. He's gonna have it checked out first.

Stock block but not a single stock internal, correct?

Seeing the title, I thought Andy Hollis had started a new thread. He recently blew up the K20 in his CRX because nitrous.

i knew a guy that put an ebay turbo kit on an otherwise stock Del Sol and didn't even do so much as a computer tune on it. he also set the wastegate to something like 15psi... he split the block into 3 pieces and launched all 4 pistons all over highway 55 just outside of Maple Lake, MN when he was passing a line of cars... there was nothing under the hood that was salvagable..
