Well there's always been one stumbling block in this whole Trifecta of Crap plan. The Wartburg has to be driven on public roads for the BABE rally. This means registering it which requires a title. Something the Wartburg did not have.

Until today....

I take back everything bad I've ever said about the NJMVC. The process was actually less complicated than the hoops that places like Broadaway title wanted me to jump through.

Of course now that I know how to get titles for untitled cars it has opened up a whole new world of car shopping to me, no longer will the words "no title" be a stumbling block to automotive acquisition. SWMBO is not pleased.

How hard was it? Did they ask if it was yours or anything at all along those lines?

I always worry that "no title"=stolen!

Simple process, Run an ad 3 times within 2 weeks in the paper and get affidavit from them Send letter to local PD certified, include receipt in package 3 notarized statements from 3 people who have seen the car in your possession. 2 DMV forms, one notarized Pictures of the car Picture or pencil rubbing of the VIN Check for $60 Helpful but not required, include current insurance card (as far as MVC is concerned if your insurance company will issue insurance its yours)

The internets have known my address for awhile. Downside to website ownership, I'm just a whois lookup away.

I'd say the Evo is overpriced, that's almost dealer edition money. I'm kinda tempted by the other one but only as spares for mine...

I wonder why it isn't that easy in North Carolina. A guy at NCDMV told me that I needed a title bond(?) or something to have a non-titled car put into my name. The way I understood it, it would cover fees, title search and also put some kinda of bond on the car for 3yrs. The $1200-1800 price tag for a $400 car turned me off to the idea.

I still have yet to get a title for my RX7. I wish there was a method that easy in Texas.

my brother lives in england, i go over occasionally, and am tempted to buy a car over there and just leave it at his place to drive. It would make me go over more often, lol.

Still sounds like a PITA, to me. Unless I've got some rare gem like a Wartburg with no title, I'd rather just wait for another deal WITH a title to come along. I know for old cars it's fairly common and I'm ok with something more rare, but for newer stuff it's very rare that I'd justify that kind of hassle.

Yeah, I wouldnt waste the effort on the average car but I've come across quite a few interesting classics where the paperwork is missing that I would invest the time on. There is also probably alot more scruitiny on a modern car than there is on something like a 1958 Wartburg. Its easier for the beaurocrat in Trenton to understand how something that old could be missing a title, but a 1997 Chevy whatever, that smells a little more fishy Im sure.

It always sounded like a PITA to me but really its a phone call to the paper, getting 3 of your buddies to run to the bank and have a statement notarized, mailing a letter to the police and filling out 2 forms. When I just stopped to tackle it one step at a time it wasnt so bad.

Started with the paper, by the time they had finished their 2 week run I had the rest of the documents collected and ready to mail.

What does the ad you put in the paper say?

"I have a Wartburg with no title. Is it yours?"

Really though ??

With a bit more legalese but yes

"Take notice that in accordance with N.J.S.A. 39:10 - 12, application has been made to the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, Trenton, New Jersey, for duplicate certificate of ownership for (year make model and VIN) Objections, if any, should be made immediately in writing to the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, Special Title Unit, P.O. Box 017, Trenton, New Jersey, 08666."

The same text is what you send to your local PD as well.

When word hit the paper that you owned a Wartburg how did you control the hordes of women that surely flocked to your home.

I just google mapped your house. you need to mow.

This is why I love GA, pre 1986 = no title necessary, at 25 y/o no emissions even in covered counties like Fulton (Atlanta). 86+ is supposed to have title, but they'll issue you registration w/o if you have the Police Inspection, as much of the chain of ownership as possible (for their records) and valid insurance and emissions (if necessary).

I want to get this into BABE if I can bring the seller down on price:

OH THE GLORY (and I'm a born and raised New Englander)!!!!
