I wonder how often unauthorized work really happens.

I have close relatives who have worked at dealerships for years.

The service writers and service managers have huge monetary incentives to oversell work.

Honest mechanics who won't over pad their diagnosis are treated like pariahs.

I rarely go to dealerships but over half the time I have  had work done by one something else "broke" within a few days of that service.  I am convinced one Honda dealership cut a power steering hose on my wife's Odyssey went I had them change the alternator (it involved disconnection of the engine mounts and jacking up the engine to get the alternator out of its crevice).

Of course the stealership insisted that they didn't have to touch that hose when changing the alternator, the hose right next to the alternator, and I ended up paying them to fix that as well.

I'm going to back this tech up. He got screwed by the service writer/advisor and he's having to do free work. It's well within his rights to bitch and moan about the situation. Purposely making the customer wait is petty and uncalled for; but, working flat rate sucks and when you can't clock time on a car it means you aren't getting paid. His timing is being wasted just as much as the customers.

While I agree, he should be pissed at the advisor not the client.  Since he isn't, my bet is that the whole service department has a long history of milking clients for unnecessary work and the mechanic considers the service advisors his partners in crime.
