It WAS a good day until the last hundred yards of the drive home from the gym in the Miata. Then there was a loud bang and no more forward propulsion. Coasted into the driveway and then managed to grunt and push it up into the garage. It's got no drive, makes rat-a-tat-tat noises in gear and the aluminum differential cross member snapped right off on one side. And, it's around the freezing mark. Why couldn't this thing self destruct in July ? It's a 99 NB, base model, so I believe that's a 4.10 open differential. I'll be looking for a replacement now. I was bragging about how little this car has cost me just last week. Oh well, c'est la vie.
My day stated with pulling the truck's door open as a soda fell out, blew up, and sprayed all over my uniform pants which don't take well to caramel coloring. After work, I'm dropping the Ranger's transmission. At least its not too cold here.
Keep your head high and try to have a better day. Wonder what caused your catastrophic failure.
Every day is a bad day for me, I work in a warranty call center.
It's not like the car has been abused or anything. I don't track it or autocross it. I can't believe the previous owner did either. I did notice a slight bit of vibration the last couple of miles, so it was already chewing up the gears , I think. I'll have to drain it and see what comes out. There's no sign of any oil at all on the housing, so i doubt it has run dry. We'll find out eventually.
Warren,
will an NA torsen fit on an NB?

I've got a brand new open diff., but no R&P. Also have 2 smooth cases from a 1.6. Also have 2 viscous 1.6L diff's, 1 with R&P I believe. Not sure if they'll work for you, but if you need a band-aid quick, I've got 'em.
In reply to Protege2886 and CKLockRacer:
I believe (but I'll check ) that any 1.8 differential will work. I'll be doing a lot of web surfing to figure out what does or doesn't. I think I read that the 1.6 R&P are smaller than a 1.8 though, something about 6" and 7" sizes.
Thanks for the offer, Phil, but I don't think any 1.6 stuff works.
I just received an email from a fellow who is parting out a Miata. I had asked him how much he wanted for the differential and carrier. He asked me where it was on the car.
Somehow, I doubt this will pan out.
1.6 definitely won't fit, but any 1.8 miata housing should work. RX7 diff will work, but the housing is different (since you said you snapped off one of the wings).
