According to the ad, this was an engine that was pulled from a project and the heads were removed and it turns out everything is pristine.
According to my eyes, the block and heads have been hot-tanked because there is NO evidence of oil or paint anywhere. All edges appear to have been "broken" with a die grinder.
What the hell. Clearly the ad description is wrong. At the same time, the block also clearly hasn't been bored or honed. Who would disassemble an engine, hot tank it, deburr all the edges, then reassemble it with all the old parts?
Very confusing. Especially since, now that I have a handle on a good running 12A for my "nice" RX-7, I have that weird tingle for a small displacement V8 that won't go away.
Look at the dirt in the lifter tops. That engine has been sitting a long time.
My guess is was going to be rebuilt but then the owner of the car decided to go with a more modern engine, so they threw it back together and are trying to sell it to recoupe some of the expenses. A 1964 260ci small block isn't the most desirable engine anyway, unless you're restoring an early Mustang and want something close to correct, with the early bellhousing bolt pattern and all that.
In reply to Patrick :
Too big.
There was a long wordy thing here that I just deleted because I'm 1984 like that. The salient point is the 4.8 is too big, both in external dimensions, weight, and displacement. I know that's three things, but that's just how big the 4.8 is.

Couldn't you get a roller 5.0 cheaper? Same basic block right?
Edit now I see the displacement restriction. But there's no replacement for displacement.

Displacement bad when you want to be able to pedal the car. My ideal is 200 ft-lb or less (that is what gears are for) and minimal inertia.
What I need to do is find someone willing to trade an RX-7 and a garage full of spares, even-across for a TR8. This, of course, is incredibly unlikely, in the vein of craigslist ads for a rusted out Corolla that just needs brake lines and an engine, easy fix, will trade for lifted dually diesel pickup.
