Mrs Frog has one on her golf cart. Flashes 38 different patterns of yellow and white light. She doesn't want to get run over when shes out scoping deer in the neighborhood.
I have used it sometimes at night on the roof of the Outlaw Bug. Lately i have thought i might need it on the roof of the GR86 when I go into the city of jacked-up trucks.
We once had an issue and had to back out a trailer onto a fairly busy road. I put on a hard hat and yellow safety vest, setup two cones and directed traffic so we could back out safely. All while holding my beer.
The reason it looks official is because it identifies a service vehicle. Run that thing in Colorado without DOT authorization and you'll get a class B ticket.

Up here all the private plow trucks have a amber light going for the most part. They also tend to plow with a partial 12 pack in the truck. You will never see one pulled over unless they end up in a ditch, but you'll probably find some empties when the leaving piles melt.

If you're just operating it on private property, no worries.
We only run the blinky light when at the track or if we are on one of our Classic Motorsports Road Tours pulled over on the side of the road for some extra visibility.
Also slapping it on the roof through the window makes me feel like I am about to be part of the Beastie Boys Sabotage music video.
The Govt Mule was the most "authorized" vehicle I ever owned.
Bring an orange cone with and park in places and ways that "might" be considered illegal.
I put yellow LEDs on the golf carts of our soaring club, FBO required but safety first!
Every time the thing flashed, the ignition cut out. =~ 0
Switched to rotating bulbs, we're good now.
