HARRISBURG, N.C. (AP)—The oldest motorsports publication in America is going out of business after 76 years.

The publisher of National Speed Sport News says the final issue is Wednesday.

The first edition of the weekly paper was dated Aug. 16, 1934. Chris Economaki sold that first issue at Ho-Ho-Kus Speedway in New Jersey, began writing for the paper soon after and became editor in 1950.

His daughter, Corrine, said Tuesday the sluggish economy has made it too difficult for her to continue the publication. She called NSSN an integral part of the Economaki family for its entire 76-year run.

The online version of the newspaper will continue and provide daily news.

I've been around motorsports and cars for the last 22 years. I have never heard of them before...

That's a shame. His magazine was definitely more popular in circle track, um, circles, but Chris Economaki is as much a part of American racing as Richard Petty, Don Garlits, or AJ Foyt.

40 years I've been around motorsports (I grew up around circle tracks), and I've never heard of it.

Born 1920. Wow. I grew up listening to him announce races on TV. We were big fans of ABC's wide world of sports when it was good. I didn't realize that's how he got into the biz, however.

hard to fathom ... I don't follow circle track much and I've know of and read (off and on) NSSN for 30 - 40 yrs... very sad to see it go

When he was pit reporter (probably in the 70's) for stock car or Indy racing he was always introduced as the editor of NSSN.

Can't say I've heard of NSSN. I thought the OP misspelled "Nissan" at first. Still it is sad to see such a long-time fixture in the industry come to an end.

I have heard of it, but I am borderline fanatic about motorsport.

That being said, I have never touched one...or even seen one for that matter.

I had a subscription for a long time. It had the best coverage of open wheel and non-Nascar stock car racing in the world. Unfortunately the interweb pretty much killed of the bi-weekly newspaper. It's too bad. Having met Mr Economaki he was a class guy and a walking time capsule of everything racing in America.
