Anyone have a recommendation for an odo (VDO) repair shop? My local guy retired. I'm thinking there's some shop somewhere that's got tons of folks mailing theirs in??
I have an acquaintance who wants me to pull his and fix what is probably just a gear that's loose on a shaft but I'd prefer to have it done professionally and not be responsible. My limited experience with these things is that, even if I'm super careful, the numbers don't re-align perfectly and it looks like, well, tampered with. This guy's car has unbelievably low miles for its age and I don't want to be the cause of any suspicion should he try to sell it.
Thanks...
What kind of car? If the gears in the odometer are stripped, http://www.odometergears.com/ sells replacements for a number of brands.

Thanks for the link; I might use them for one of my own cars in the future.
Getting the speedo needle off in order to remove the odo mechanism is really touchy -- the needles break easily. That, and the whole number alignment thing. The car is 26 years old, has <70k miles on it.

Sometimes, the obvious choice is the best choice.

Overseas Speedometer specializes in VDO.
North Hollywood Speedometer did both my VDO speedometer and clock.

My E30's odo quit on me, so I thought I'd check them out. HOLY berkeleying E36 M3! $85 FOR A COUPLE OF TINY PLASTIC GEARS!?!?!?!?!?

I've also used them with great results on my 911.

The guy who sells them is a one man show, and he has a lot of development time in his product. They're also made of a better material than the OEM gears, which tend to turn to mush as they age. The price is driven by the low production numbers (if he was making them by the millions, certainly they would be cheaper), plus he's the only source out there. Compared to having the odometer professionally repaired or buying new from BMW, it's a good deal.
We use Palo Alto Speedometer. http://www.paspeedo.com/
Thanks for the post to my website and all those that responded with the other great shops. Any of the shops listed carry my gears so you can't go wrong. If you aren't sure what to do, I don't charge for advice. Call me and I can walk you through what would be best for you. Palo Alto, North Hollywood and Overseas are all great shops that can take care of your needs. There are more also.
We supply the US and abroad with odometer gears. In fact I just got back from Forster Instruments in Toronto. It's incredibly expensive to make the parts correctly and this is what I do for a living. You should check out the other parts we make, not just odometer gears anymore.

Thanks to everyone with suggestions, and to Jeff C. for coming online for a visit here, too; I'll keep you in mind in the future.
For now, though, it's all moot: the guy with the low-miler is apparently too cheap to pay even me, a shadetree offering to pull the odo for a fraction of a real shop (he got a $400 quote).

My old motorcycle shop used Palo Alto Speedo, too. Recommended.
