I'm putting a 1987 toyota 2 wheel drive pickup rearend in my 57 volvo. The pinion is offset 2 1/2" in the center section.Housing end to pinion center is 24" on one side and 26 1/2" on the other side. Can anyone tell me if this rearend has different length axle shafts? If it does i'm going to narrow the long side 2 1/2" and use another short side axle.I'd really appreciate some help on this.
Can't say for sure, but pretty much every truck axle is offset to one side by 2 to 3 inches, and has two different axle lengths. Just finished narrowing an Explorer axle by shortening the long side 2 7/8" to match the other. Now have an axle thats 56.25" wheel mounting to wheel mounting face. Add the thickness of the disc brake hats I'm running, and it brings me to 56.75". Probably add wheel spacers to take advantage of higher offset wheels.
I went with the toyota which is "56 wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.I plan to take "2 1/2 which will give me "53 1/2 wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface and center the pinion. This is the same as my stock volvos stock width.Toyota rear ends are pretty bullet proof stock and there is tons of aftermarket parts if I ever have an issue.
I don't think that those have different length axle shafts. It's just the pinion that's offset, not the entire diff.
