And dealers wonder why people buy parts from online parts departments of other dealers, Rock Auto, Amazon and the like.

Fortunately I had other things to do in town as well so it wasn’t a complete waste of an hour’s round trip.

On the other hand, it's possible they're closed because everyone already went to online parts suppliers, and they were just standing around twiddling their thumbs on Saturdays.

In general, I really hate businesses that I cannot access outside of my normal working hours. I get it if it's not profitable to operate 6 or 7 days a week, but at least make one of your off days during the week. You can't get my money if I can't make it there to give it to you, and I'm certain that I am not the only person working a 9 (actually 8) to 5 job.

In reply to stuart in mn :

There were usually a couple of people asking for parts at the parts counter when I went there on Saturdays. Of course it could be that they were the whole set of customers for that day. I don't know.

However I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who can't get there during the week.

Pro tip, the only people buying parts at the dealer on Saturday are there because no one else has it. Most Saturdays are about 2% of weekly sales.

Hmm, guess I wouldn't be getting any of your money then!  I work Monday-Thursday.  I realize I work during business hours, however I also have a life and a family with small children.  I want to see them and have no desire to be at my office until 9pm on weeknights or be open Saturdays.  People can choose to see me and get my amazingly AWESOME service, or they can go to some crappy corporate dental office and be seen by some noob dentist or dental assistant at 8pm...

No one wants to work weekends. Yeah it's inconvenient when buying stuff but I am glad my shop is closed Saturdays.

Dentists and doctors are a bit different though, I think most people generally are able to leave work for a dentist or doctors appointment.

Edit: I also don't have the alternative of just buying online, as I do with most other products and services.

This. New welding shop about a mile down the road from me, only open 9-5 Monday-Friday, 9-12 Saturday. I don't know how many people realize they're out of gas before noon on Saturday, but I see how many people try to get there after.

Although it's true that most folks don't want to work on the weekends, some folks do. Personally, I've worked every single Saturday since Christmas of 2010.

I’m in industrial sales making calls all week.  Know when I get caught up?

Saturday morning - 6am - 9:30am.

Do I have to or want to work Saturdays?  Absolutely not but it makes my Monday’s not suck major butt if all the piddly crap is not on my desk.

Reading this at 8:55 PM on Saturday. Just finished my dinner, two hours after the rest of the family. Still wearing my scrubs. I'll be back in the office tomorrow.

I'm not going to hold it against anyone for not working on weekends.

After working terrible hours at places that don't give a E36 M3 about their employees, and experiencing ever expanding hours so people can get their car worked on at 9 pm and also 5 am, and finally finding a company that put it's employees as a priority, I will gladly shop at places that are closed on weekends and close at a normal hour

A local shop is open Tuesday-Saturday. They do very well on Saturday.

Hell, I'd love to work on Saturday or Sunday and get a day off during the week. Less fishing pressure on a Wednesday than a Saturday.

I happily drove out to Manassas ( approx. 40+ mins ) to the 24hr Autozone when pushing the S-10 and SE through emissions after work at 11 O'Clock at night.  I would have loved to have gone to Fastenal just over the county line but they have M-F 9-5 type hours that just doesn't sit with my schedule unfortunately ( buying bolts/washers/nuts at AZ can be a pain ).  Now if that Harbor Freight out in Manassas was 24hr - whoa boy but I'd be broke for a while. smiley

All the motorcycle dealers in my town EXCEPT the Harley dealer are closed on Sundays.

You guys sell TOYS!

Who the f--- is shopping for motorcycles mid-day on a Wednesday?

Be open on the weekends and close Tuesday to Wednesday or something.

Exactly. There’s some businesses that don’t make sense to have open during the first couple days of the week or even departments. There are places that I know are closed Sunday-Monday, so they specifically had Saturday open. Hell, when I worked at the Vair Shop, we were closed Wednesday and Sunday. Was it weird to have two days off so far from each other? At first, but you get used to it.

Most car dealers have more than one guy behind the parts counter, so there’s no reason that they can’t stagger schedules to allow the parts department to be open on Saturday. Not everyone has kids in sports or has to be joined at the hip with the spouse two days in a row.

The only reason I can see that the sales end of the dealers wouldn’t work, is because financial institutions for loans and such aren’t open on the weekends or at least that was what I was told by a dealer.

Maybe it's an exception nationwide but in D.C. emissions ( we only do emissions ) testing is Tuesday thru Saturday with the techs having Sunday and Monday off.  Actually let me check something......pretty certain all of the DMV is closed Sunday and Monday.  Now I've never seen it busy on a Saturday when I go down and they warn you Tuesday morning can get busy but when all you are doing is emissions it goes fairly quickly most of the time.

I do get the financial institutions thing it's why I never bother paying down credit card debt on a Friday/payday as it doesn't register until well into Monday takes the guessing out of balance availability. smiley

Until I retired, I worked alternate weekends or every 3rd weekend for decades.  I don't begrudge anyone being closed on the weekend.

A long time ago, at least in the rural south, it wasn't uncommon for businesses to be closed after noon on Wednesdays but open on Saturdays. Not much was open on Sundays. Generally speaking, this forced people to plan ahead a little more & gave families 1 day a week when everyone could be home at the same time.

I want to like that 24 hr autozone but I walked into there at midnight one night and they told me they would not be able to sell me anything for the next hour because they were doing something with the registers.  They were not closed you would just not be able to purchase anything for the next hour.

To the OP’s original question:

Is the service department open on Saturdays?

If the service department isn’t open on Saturday, then there probably isn’t enough parts business to cover the cost of having someone work behind the counter.

I don't know what the rules are in Canada, but many (all?) states in the U.S. cannot sell motor vehicles on Sundays. Around here, the birthplace of HD, only a couple of the dozen dealers in the area are open on Sunday, and that's just for the clothing department and parts department.
