It seems I'm losing about a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so. The only evidence of a leak is a spot about the size of a dime on the driveway.
I noticed today that there is oil in the tail pipe.
I haven't noticed any loss of power, the engine missing, overheating, etc.
A quick internet search points to valve seals.
Any idea what it could be? Do valve seals sound like the problem?
Is she a turbo? If so depending on the miles I'd look there.
+1. The turbo CHRA can lose oil out either side. If you've confirmed oil in the tailpipe, check inside the intercooler to see if you've got more than trace amounts in there, too.
It is a turbo. 112K miles.
If it is a bad turbo, what effect will driving it have between now and when I can get it fixed?
there would usually have to be a reason for the seals to go bad, like excessive shaft play because of worn bearings or something, which could be caused by extended oil change intervals.
if you keep driving it, it could take out the catalytic converters, as well as cause irrepairable damage to the turbine wheels, shaft, and bearing and seal seating surfaces. if the turbo is just leaking oil and has a little excessive play right now, it can still be rebuilt relatively inexpensively. if you keep at it, it could mean replacing the entire turbo assembly, as well as causing the failure of other expensive parts.
Thanks. I'm going to look into getting into the shop tomorrow to have it looked over. There's a local Volvo mechanic that friends of mine swear by.
I drove it about 1000 miles this week and just noticed these things today.
