Yeah, the problem is really that the best AWD option is far and away Subaru, but those are not the kind of cars women think are cool. I'd bet a nice RWD BMW with an LSD and some good snows will get you up that driveway better than the Scion. Part of the problem with the Scion is that the weight transfers the wrong what when going up a hill (ie, to the back wheels) and the other issue is that I'm sure it has a wide-open diff, a problem you can avoid with a BMW I imagine.
is it being bought to be cool ? or is it being bought to get around in the winter weather and put most of your worries to bed ….
maybe I've just finally reached the age where what I drive doesn't define me … doesn't make me cool or uncool
Save yourself 5k and read a book or two about how to get laid, then buy a decent car that suits your needs. If your split is anything like my friends that have been through it, have a few extra dollars in your pocket at end is worth it.
If that won't work get a Miata or a mustang convertible, every midlife crisis involves one of those two.
This man knows how to get laid. But we all know that when you are newly single/divorced you don't need to be driving around a $1500 beater.
Thus far I think a Saabaru is one of the best suggestions in terms of AWD. E46 3 series should be great in the winter with some snows. I'd probably go with just RWD.

Re. the BMW … something something, porcupines and BMW drivers, something something …
don't think that's the perception he wants to project
For several season I had what might be said, 3 drive trains. In two vehicles. First was my do everything ZX2SR, 2nd was my Liberty, 4x4.
The KJ had Trac Loc rear. In rwd,on slippery going is was unmanageable. Nec. to use 4WD anytime it got iffy.
The ZX2SR on Blizzaks was the vehicle of choice when the going got slippery, much more control.
Is AWD necc, Not really. When I was towing my ice racer on a trailer, one time I came off the lake up a fairly steep bank. Once I got on the road I went to shift out of 4WD. Guess what ?
