I have an idea rolling around in my head and it rather depends on the availability of 4x100 13" wheels in a FWD-ish offset.
My searches are proving fruitless. The only thing I can find is Civic VX wheels, which are rare as hens' teeth and priced accordingly.
Anything else I should look into?
BMW 320 had 13" 4x100 aluminum rims but are et13. I'm thinking the early golfs did too but nit sure...

Honda offered plenty of OE 13's thru the 80's. The first year CRX Si's, second and third gen Accords, and first and second gen Preludes had them; all were 5" wide. Also, check for first gen Sirocco and Rabbit wheels. Maybe BMW 2002/320i alloys may work for you.
Your search shouldn't be all that difficult and don't limit yourself to OE choices.

Some Mk1 VW wheel. They call them manhole cover wheels, have no idea what they came on.

OE tends to be fairly strong. I found some aftermarket alloys for ~$70 each (maybe fragile) and there's always Mini Stock wheels (heavy, designed to bend easily) but I'd rather have an OE wheel, personally, so I'm looking for ideas that I can seed car-part with since you can't search for "13x5.5 4x100 under $50 each".
Although that would be sweet.

Mk 1 Scirocco. And maybe early Quantums. They may even be the same as early Audi 4000 wheels.
86 - 89 Chevy Nova/Spectrum. Also some of the Toyotas of the late 80's early 90's. This may help your search http://www.vehicle-bolt-pattern.com/

fiat was 4x98 and had quite a few aluminum rims.
I have a set of the 13s from my e21 320i that I'll let go cheap if you're interested. They're the ones that look like mini-alpina wheels. Offset may not be very good for FWD though.
Name a price, and we'll see if I can get that much by, oh, the 23rd. 15mm offset should be workable. More track is something that a Rabbit desperately needs, anyway.
I'll send you an email with some pics in a bit.
here's a pic of one of them. Sent you an email.
BTW, looks like offset is ET13 vice 15.
correction, ET18, not ET13. I must need glasses.
I've got some 13" BBS you can have.
They look exactly like this (but more faded).

In reply to EvanB:
Love those, had a set on my '95 R-pack Miata.
Those will look period-correct with little bitty rally tires on them, yep.
Mounted on a Rabbit is better than collecting dust in my garage.
Damn, now I want to buy a rabbit.

Try looking for a set of American Racing AR-24's. They came in 13x5.5 and are reasonably attractive. They might still be out there.
1st gen CRX's had optional 13's, but are also probably pretty rare.
I'm OG enough to remember when VX wheels were still common. Wow.
Ford Aspire and some Escorts had 13" 4x100. I need to downsize the zx2 front brakes before I get a set though so save some for me.
edit: the oem aspire and escorts wheels where mostly steelies.
The RX-7 was available with 13's, but the offset is a bit funky.
I have a set of 13" vx wheels. Not sure how well they would fit a rabbit. Lemme know if interested.
I got some off of a 84ish prelude about 4 years ago. Evan's BBSs are sweet though, too sweet to pass up, you should hop on those.
Almost all small cars from the '70's and '80's had 13" wheels. I'd shop any Honda or VW from that time period, plus some of the sportier Toyotas.
There was a 13 inch wheel available on mk2 Jetta Coupes called the Ninja Star. I snagged a pair off Craigslist years ago and had them on my 93 Escort.
