As a Challenge car build I would like information about putting a RWD trans behind a Subie engine.  I see where someone put a R150 from a Toyota T100. But he never mentions where the bellhousing is from.

RWD Subie

I might have found it from a 3 year old post...

Bill Hincher in Toledo Ohio. He still makes them an they're $475 plus shipping.

Why not the Subaru trans?

This was supposed to be a Challenge type question, and now it is.  Sorry for the confusion.

Check his thread on rallyanarchy.

The Frisbee Twins' transmission should fit.

I'm seconds into this video you linked to, and... why did he cut through a CV shaft with an angle grinder?  Like, why not pull properly and resell?

Kind of wide ratio trans for the application.

In reply to Datsun310Guy :

Converting an AWD trans to RWD is a recipe for perpetual breakage because all the power has to go through a couple transfer gears in the back that look like they were rejected from a watch factory.

I't's probably okay if you never drive the car to any percentage of its envelope to where its drive type makes itself known, or if you are a drifter so you are already expecting to break things left, right, and center anyway.

best advice here. It is made for the engine, it can probably handle it's power, and it does not need some weird adaptor for the bell housing and a frankenclutch

In reply to mad_machine :

I was told that the trans would not bolt to an EJ engine.

Meanwhile people are putting rare dual-range EJ transmissions in Crosstreks and it bolts up to the engine just fine, which is the opposite engine-trans swap but should be proof that Subaru did not change the bellhousing pattern to any significant degree.

I think the problem is that the FR-S/BR-Z transmission puts the starter high on the right, on the transmission side.  In other words, where the turbo is on turbo EJs.  And specifically, I think the problem is that some people make the incorrect assumption that all EJs have to have turbos.

It was to be a Challenge oriented question, I forgot to add that but I will fix.

So to fully lay out the "what if's".  I have a 1998 Eclipse GS w/manual trans and a 420a with a bad head gasket and a bad slave cylinder.  The smart thing to do would be to fix the head gasket and slave cylinder and then add lightness.  Simmer and stir and take to the Challenge.  The car was free, I have free Enkei 17"wheels.  I have a set of free take off tires for the free wheels.  So I can technically do this for $120 in parts.  (Stupid stretch to yield bolts or it would be less).

Meanwhile I see these glorious builds going on.  And not just for the Challenge!  And while I have zero experience doing swaps I don't think that should stop me from trying.  A co-worker has a 2001-ish CL-S he is going to do an engine swap on.  But it doesn't look like he will let go of the old engine.  So next we have a turbo Subaru at work that has been sitting due to a bad auto trans.  My current thought being to remove the 420a drive train and install the Subaru engine with a RWD 5 speed behind it.  Use a Mitsu GSX rear subframe and third member.   This will probably never happen, but you have to start somewhere.

Ok, so I am a dork.  Or SuperDork for that matter.  I *JUST* thought to get prices on used transmissions for BRZ/FRZ models.  And they are Challenge priced.  That would make this trans swap simple enough for even me.  So for now I should fix the head gasket and go to the Challenge this year.  And then do the swap for next year.   Yeah, that's the ticket.  Now to make it happen.

Look!  Squirrel!

If you buy this, you can have two chances to use an O.E. Subaru transmission with a matching (not that it matters for RWD) rear diff.
