This past Sunday I spent the day volunteering. My time at the event was spent making my self available to owners of cars that I may never own but I sure lust after.

The day was spent offering to ride along with people who wanted to experience what their cars were capable of.  I always like to start off as a passenger.  Once I have an indication of how the owner is attaching the elements of the course, I offer to drive the car if they are amenable.  I short shift to second or leave it in auto mode.  Helping someone experience momentum is all that I am trying to offer.

Then I get an offer to drive this.

The car is under development.  It will be both a track and autocross car.  No, I did not shift out of second for a lap. I did not hit the rev limiter. Or trigger the ABS. But I did do a sub 60 second lap.

So, what did I accomplish. I spent the day in all sorts of cars. I never unpacked my old BMW that you can just make out in the picture and I hope I shared my love of an event that might not be road racing, but is still a real rush.

And the answer to the unasked question is, Cayman GTS with a PDK.  They are magical. You might find your self spontaneously breaking out in uncontrolled laughter at what the car can do.  I know I did.  No, I feel no shame at sharing that when the car is that good.

Not a bad way to spend an afternoon at all.

I road race, do HPDEs and autocross; I prioritize the events in that order as well.

I don't refer to autocross as a racing, I refer to it as autocross, not because I'm a snob about autocross isn't racing but mostly to keep the events straight at our house. If I say track day, race or autocross my wife knows what the schedule is. I also refer to it as autocross because it requires a different skill set and mind set.

The Formula 500 has made me enjoy autocross again. I've always liked it but I enjoy it a lot more with a faster car, whereas at track events I don't care whether I have a fast car or not.

As for driving other peoples amazing cars; I do that alot of PCA tracks days and it's fun to show people what they can do with their cars.

At the end of the day autocross is a crap load of fun.

That is a great looking Cayman! And it's really interesting to compare the blue Carrera (turbo S?) versus the red Carrera opposing it. Amazing to see how much they've grown that car!
