I am Selling my 86' Toyota pickup 4x4. It is Almost completely rust-free. It has an automatic transmission. 4x4 works great. NEEDS MOTOR WORK. sounds like bottom end. Should I go for it? Is the engine work something that can be done in vehicle?

I know I've never worked on an engine while it was in the vehicle

Its a pain to even pull the oil pan on that 4x4 with the engine in its not impossible but its tough its not hard to pull it really I'd just yank it out and repair it

I have done rod bearings "in-car" before. It isn't fun, but it works.

With the 4WD stuff in there though, it may be easier to pull it. I agree with redbone.

The 20/22R motor is known for sloppy timing chains that cause the timing chain tensioner to make a sound just like rod bearings.

I wouldn't worry too much about the motor, they are cheap and easy.

The 5 spd. swap, on the other hand, kinda sucks. It's not terrible, but it crosses the line in my head between "job" and "project."

This too It'll milkshake the motor the timing chain will wear into the water pump housing either way replace chain with kit with metal timing chain guides to correct future water pump failures I actually took the timing cover to the head shop had it sandblasted and tigged the hole shut cost $30 instead of $75 or so for new cover

Almost certainly the timing chain at fault. But, how much damage was done to the motor? I'd say assume complete meltdown.

No box, no motor. Five bills? I think that's a bit high. I'd look for a better one.

Always assume the worst that is the best way to go.......

$500 is "too much?" When you can get just about that much out of it for scrap, I think it's a reasonable price.

if it was rusty enough to remove the bed, check between the gas tank and frame rail; pass side. Hard to get in there to check, but you get grass and mud packed up there and she'll rust through quick.

I just saw someone selling a 22re engine with all the attachments, transfer case and 5 speed for 400$, hell of a deal though the transfer case and 5 speed had tons of miles on them. I don't have any more space now though. I wish I would have used a metal backed timing guides when I did the job instead I used the cheapest looking plastic ones from Kragen.

My little truck had the head rot out between cylinder 1 and 2 because either bad coolant, electrolysis, or casting porosity or a combination of all 3. I have been able to plug it using epoxy but it doesn't work all that great and I redo it every 6-12months or 5000 miles. I bought a used head for cheap though and if the thing pops again it is coming off, to hell with it.

Good luck, I like the look. I like flat beds, don't know why.

Got burned on one of those "rust free" upstate NY trucks a few years ago. Right down to the red color. It's quite overpriced imo.

It's rust free because all the steel is missing.
