Do you love E30-chassis BMW M3s but hate how common they are? Would Evos intrigue you if they weren’t so played out? Are you a fan of authentic Cobras but think it’s a bit too common, since a few hundred exist in the world?

Don’t worry, we have just the car for you. It’s called the Audi Sport quattro, and …

If I won the lottery...

There's very few ultra high dollar cars I'd really want to buy. This is one of them.

Now you've got me looking up Ur-quatros on Craigslist.

At least you didn't have to drive this one. I was looking up Ur-quattros hourly for at least a month afterwards.

I thought the capitalization rules on "quattro" were that the original car should be capitalized (because that's it's name), but all of the later Audis have a different name (100, A4, whatever) with a "quattro" system, and should thus use a lowercase "q".

And yes, my fantasy world where I'm as rich as Jay Leno includes an original quattro in factory livery. :)

And it turns out that Audis from 1990 and earlier are one of the few things you can't find on Atlanta Craigslist.

That cheap?  I thought they were around a quarter million, ten years ago.

There are a LOT of replicas.  The SQ was a ridiculous and absurd car, so people will happily cut up ur-qs to shorten the wheelbase.

However almost nobody fixes the windshield angle.  Real SQs had a more vertical windshield, taking the windshield, doors, and A-pillars from the 2 door 80 (4000).  2 door 80s are very hard to find, and 4 doors' doors and window glass are too short.  But there are some people who have done it "right".

The subject irks me because I still vividly remember a magazine from across the pond showing a picture of a "genuine Sport" that had an urq windshield and doors, which looks really dumb on a short wheelbase car and is a dead giveaway.  Oh and it was right hand drive, all SQs were LHD.  Bigger dead giveaway that it was just a cut up urq.

I guess a lot of SQs do not have their original engines, as when Audi Sport needed a replacement aluminum block, they'd go to the dealer network and see if any were in for service, then they would replace the street car's engine block "under warranty" with an iron one...

I might be persuaded to sell the Quantum.  It's like a 4000q but it has a better rear suspension.  And it's a wagon.

(It is not running yet, but I was shooting for Group 4 era power levels from a ten-valve.  The moment has kinda passed for me, so I am mostly continuing the project out of inertia)

Some cool stuff like this in Ken Block's tour of Audi's museum. Hard work pays off. Not well enough for them to let him drive the original though, skip to 4:00 =)
