I "race" a v6 auto version. It is a busted piece of E36 M3 but with a stick it could be a fair amount of fun.

Dodge Stratus (Mine is a Chrysler Cirrus). It is a 2.5L Mitsu motor similar to the engines in the NA 300gt and V6 Galant

Never driven one though so what do I know...

I briefly owned a 2.0 sohc /5spd stratus and regret parting it out as a donor to a neon i also had.

The 2.0/5spd 1g stratus is an underappreciated car imo, and im being serious.

Im a big hater on the 2.5 6g73 they stuck in those and other cars. It took a perfectly reasonable engine top end (for a 3.0 or 3.5L) and stuck an underbored motor under it. The runner CSA, on that displacement, would have it making power at 8k rpm except that they strangled it in other ways (runner too long, plenum too small, TB too small, cams too small) with the end result that it doesnt make good power anywhere. Compare it to it's contemporary 2.5 from mazda and the difference is pretty stark.

Luckily, though, the 3.0 shortblock is a direct drop in and a massive improvement. So here's hoping singleslammer's 2.5 blows up and he does that. Or get brave and modify some stuff and put the 3.5 or 3.8 bottom end under it. Then you're really talking.

Also, i feel the 91-96 camrys are REALLY good cars and a v6/5spd is a perfectly passable enthusiast car in my eyes. However, there is no world where that hydraulic cooling fan is not retarded.

You're right, the 1g cloud cars dont go to E36 M3 as quickly.. (i wont say that for the 2gs.. lol).

Im reminded of the 70's cars thread where it was asked "where did they all go?". That question applies to 8g galants pretty well..

The motor is damn near the same other than bore size and manifolds, though.

This + a swaybar and some sticky tires would make for an interesting comparison to a stock-ish Miata. 270hp and a lower drag coeffiecient down the straight can make up for some serious cornering fail.

The newer V6 powered Camrys will run very low 14s in the 1/4 mile (didn't C&D do a 14.0?), and are EPA rated at 30mpg highway (better than any Miata). Hell, even the 2012 Hybrid would outrun a most NA/NB Miatas in a straight line before it ran out of juice - it has a 156hp gas engine and a 141hp electric motor, runs mid-low 15s in the 1/4.

I demand a Camry + camber bolts + sticky tires track test vs. a Miata

Aren't you guys just trying to make a Maxima?

my response to the idea of a mid 90's camry project is, okay fine. It's grassroots, & it's a path that's not already been traveled by every other magazine. A wagon would be cool too. The only problem is there really aren't many, but if you did find one I suppose all the same improvements would carry over to a more common sedan.

for the record if everything where up to me, I'd prefer this was about an s-series saturn.

on the topic of this thread, I did essentially that. Had a Maxima that I bought with intentions of just driving it to work and back. 5 years and ~$5k later it wasn't a world-beater but even in autocross it consistently finished above mid-pack in STU full of Subies and Evos. It later moved to DSP and then EP as I just did things I wanted to do with it and didn't care much about classing...It would have been a good track car in my opinion, but I only managed to get it to on HPDE and it was in the rain....

and mine was a 5th gen....heavyish, with the VQ30 (not VQ35), and beam rear axle

Yeah, but other than the E36 M3ty aftermarket and the oil burning, its not much different than screwing with any other 90s FWD 4cyl Mcstrut econo-box, which has been done 1000 times over on this forum. Then again, if this somehow happens, come talk to me.

All this camry talk has got me thinking it could be my first challenge entry although i'd have to be able to do a auto to manual swap pretty cheap, if i didn't have a MG sitting in my buddies garage with him telling me he'd like to team up for the challenge i'd prolly start my search.

Therea plenty of manual camrys if you can be a little patient. Theyre often cheaper too since they arent as good appliances.

I'm all for a GRM build up of a 90's Camry. The wagon is a good idea, but they should try to find a 2-door with a manual because I have yet to see one.

I would love to find a manual coupe. Bonus points for a v6.

If you really want to find a v6 manual theyre easier to find in solara form.

the one i rebuilt was a 5-sp 4cylinder. it was beige, believe it or not. a finance professor bought it and drove it to 300,000 miles. he always told me it was the best thing ever. then again he also suggested putting my 401k into cash a couple years ago when the dow dropped below 7000.

Aren't you guys just trying to make a Maxima?

When i saw the title of this thread, before i even opened it, i got a little annoyed because there was a thread a while back where GRM asked for project ideas and got a large number (probably majority) votes for a 4th gen maxima and didnt even seem to seriously consider it, and now i hear mention of taking a very similar but much less cool car (the fact that 100% of maximas were v6 has much to do with this) and making a project out of it..

I can't help it if Mitsubishi pitched it to derelicts and credit criminals. and e36m3 heads who never change the oil.

Right you are, but i wanted to see what you were gonna come back with (i wuz trollin).

Perfectly reasonable. What kind of 'racing' do you do with it?

as was mine, five oil changes in 5000 miles, oil came out in lumps. mine will be a 3-8 five speed if it ever blows up. Did you ever notice the most trashed car in the Stop and Shop lot is a Galant? mine's still shiny.

it's complicated though. maxima's are more readily found with a 5sp. in the toyota's favor the camry comes as a wagon, except that there aren't any.
