One more Mercedes thread...

Whilst continuing my search on CL, I found a 190E in Louisville with higher miles, but a decent price tag. http://louisville.craigslist.org/ctd/2135536827.html

Now, what was can I tell if this is the legendary 190E 2.3 16? Louisville is a bit of a drive and I can't go up there on a whim. Its a little out of my budget and I know at the first repair I'd be cussing myself, but man it'd be cool to have a dog-leg transmission. Pull a James May and put it in reverse constantly.

Although I doubt it is, its possible who has it has no idea what they have, one can always dream.

My sis had a 190... unless it is the legendary 2.3 16v, I wouldn't bother. That car had THE worst seats I ever had the displeasure of sitting on.

Get them to email you a photo of the engine bay, the 16V is every distinctive compared to the regular engine.

Now what about the body kit? The car pictured has one that somewhat resembles the Cossie car, and (according to Wikipedia) the base 190E's don't have such a kit. I presume though that the 190E 2.3 is still worlds different from the 16v.

Could be aftermarket. Someone might have stuck it on there to make people think it's a 2.3 16V.

madmachine, what year was your sisters? The 2.3-16's had very comfortable seats, and my dads 1993 300E had the most comfortable seats for a DD that I've ever sat in.

It could be... It is in one of the two colors it was offered in and it has the spoiler.

99.5% sure that's a 16V-one underhood pic will tell.

A little more research has shown that all the cosworth cars that I can find have plastic headlights, where as that car appears to have sealed beams.

I emailed the seller about an underhood pic, now we wait.

I've seen both. For some reason I think the first year had sealed beams and the later ones had composites like the SVOs, but I could be wrong.

I don't remember what year her's was. She sold it for next to nothing with the trans died and the price of repair was more than the car was worth to her

What diesel engines were available in the 190D?

Good move. IIRC, a lot of the body trim created for the Cosworth was added to the more pedestrian models late in the W201's life (especially in the US market).
