Ok so it is getting close to the Challenge and it doesn't look like the Yugo is going to get done in time (stupid life getting in the way and stupid decision to buy a W123 [one too many projects]) but I will not miss the Challenge and I could REALLY use a truck so I am torn between two options on buy a cheap compact truck, lower it a touch and put better tires on it and run it at the Challenge or buy whatever running car (Sentra, MR2, Civic, Neon, etc) for $1000-$1500 do a tune up and couple suspension mods and run that at the Challenge and for the rest of the autocross season then sell it at the end and buy a bigger pickup and have the Yugo ready for next autocross season? What would GRM do?

Get rid of the stupid decision and continue on the original path?

I am going to very soon. But there is a lot of things to do to the Yugo and it seems like it is unlikely to be done any time around the Challenge

The GRM answer to too many projects is always to buy another. Get a fullsize truck and challenge prep it.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!! I want to keep work to a minimum so I can continue the Yugo.

Uh, guess I mis-understood. You mentioned buying a second car, prepping it and selling it after the challenge. Then you'd buy a truck and continue the Yugo project.

My thought was buy the truck now, use it for the challenge and just keep it. Continue Yugo as planned.

I see what you are saying. I just was thinking that maybe a compact truck would handle better (then a full size) and I would keep it for a year or two until the Spitfire vintage racer is done and I really did need the towing of a full size truck versus buying something like a cheap MR2 or Civic or Neon using it for autocrossing this season and the Challenge and then selling that car buying a full size truck and I would have the Yugo for next autocross season and the Challenge.

Theres what, 2 and a half months left? I just tore the YFH into all of its component parts but if pushed it could be done for the challenge. Get back out there and wrench :)

Note: the above does not apply if you have a significant other, children or a life outside of your garage.

By build do you mean throw on a MBC and some sticky tires?

Hahahahahahahahaha no. Oh no. We'll be taking that thing from a 2700lb 145whp car to a 2300lb 300whp+ fire-spitting death machine. ASSuming the motor is healthy and he is still down for the Challenge, that car should be faster than mine.

As a veteran of two "unfinished" cars that I actually took to the challenge, my recommendation is to hook up with another team, or just go to Gainesville and spectate. Thrashing really hard for a mediocre finish kind of burned me out.

I'm planning on being there this fall to support a couple of efforts, but this time around its other people's cars, not mine.

I'm still hoping someone attempts the "fly and drive" approach. There are enough of us in Gainesville that we could accommodate a local purchase on someone's behalf. You then fly in, add sticky tires and go! If the car lives, drive it home, sell, profit!

Seems I have found a third option. More to follow at some point soon.

Other the significant other, my problem is moving and the garage is 40 minutes away. But that damn thing is going be ready for next autocross season and so next year, it will be really sorted for the Challenge.

Less posting, more actual working on one of your projects? Crazy idea, I know.

40 minutes away means I can't during the week.

There is great joy in having a backup Challenge car.

There is actually the possibility that I may bring my backup's backup this year.

This is a goofy idea. Take it from me, i live 60 miles from my work space and own 14 cars, nearly all of them projects.

So i know how goofy this is.

If the benz runs, bring that, or just go with someone else. Or do the truck thing since you apparently need one anyway.

You'll need to log in to post.
