So, i found this on Vortex today, a local vw guy, wants to sell or trade his 75 swallowtail Rabbit. Thinking about trading my hooptie of a jetta for it. Pics of said cars:
Rabbit
Mine
I am keeping my BBS's to put on the Eurovan when it gets here, but he is getting 2 sets of wheels. Have a laundry list for both cars.
So, whatcha think? Wise choice or not?
Love the Rabbit. The Jetta looks cool but... its kinda common and easily replaceable with another one from CL.
If the Rabbit is as sweet as it looks - I'd do it.

Old cars are for fun, new cars are for driving. Which is it that this will be used for?
the old car would be for car shows/ events that i would need to go to, the Eurovan would be my everyday...

Kinda hard to tell without knowing more about both cars. The Wabbit is going to be more interesting to the peeps on this board hands-down, including me. If the little hatch is in good shape I'd be awful tempted myself.
Good luck with the trade!
more on the Rabbit:
specs:
1.6 dual webbed carbureted motor 4 speed transmission
scirocco rear disc brakes
10.1 front brakes
new paint, it needs to be wet sanded and buffed.
new floor pans, minor rust was fixed when painted, new front end core support, and fenders.
new control arms with poly bushings.
cabby brake booster and master cylinder
tt light weight cam gears
what it needs:
needs some interior parts.
brake lines connected and bled
brake light switch.
tie rods.
comes with lots of extra parts.

Get the rabbit. You could easily replicate that Jetta if you wanted too... not sure you'll find another dub that clean anytime soon.
i'll be the dissenter of the group to keep things interesting. i like the jetta better.
I also like the Jetta far better.
As a matter of fact, i dig the exterior scheme so much, i may rip it off for my MX6.
More on my car:
113,000 miles, cold a/c, 3 inch Cold Air Intake, Stage 2 Revo software, 4BAR FPR, 3 inch turbo back exhaust with test pipe, coilovers, corner weighted, poly bushings, Corbeau fixed back racing seat, 2 sets of stock wheels.
Problems: Small coolant leak from a cracked line, but never ran hot, paint job from P.O, short shifter from P.O., but comes with a new shifter, Vacuum leak, but have the hose to fix, just no time.
Id figure the value would be the same for both cars

use SATIN BLACK, Krylon to be specific, and not for plastics. It comes off alot better than flat black.

Still available in a spray can for cheap, though, yes? Will i be able to have it come out looking halfway decent in say... a weekend?
Dew it. Dew it. You know you'll regret it if you don't. As stated before, you won't have a problem finding another Jetta. While it's cool, it's a '3' on the dead-freakin'-sexy scale compared to the rabbit. Pull the trigger before someone else does!!!

I say pass on the rabbit and give me the guys number.
I'm local. We could go halvsies.
I, for one, like late model cars that have an aspect of rat-rod personality to them.
the rabbit doesn't do anything for me. And I've had an '83 GTI, so I'm no VW hater. I just think it'd get old having a slow car like that. At least it wouldn't depreciate, I guess.
well, just got off the phone with the kid, he is down to trade! He is letting me stop by tomorrow afternoon to look at it. Just need to hook up the brake lines and bleed the brakes.

I say go for the rabbit. The jetta is just a commonplace, ubiquitous jetta made even less cool by the fact that it seems to be in the worst aesthetic shape of ANY newish jetta ive ever seen.
So i say go for the rabbit, and if you want a jetta again later on, buy one.. it wont be hard to find.
Eurovan FTW!!
i like the rabbit more, and if youre gonna use them differently anyway go for the rarer of the two.

Paint the Eurovan like the Jetta?
Considering how many RUST-FREE Rabbits there are on the road..... well, if you won't buy this, let others here have a go at it.
Admittedly, a carb'ed, 4 speed Rabbit doesn't sound all that wonderful (okay, I prefer the fuel injected Rabbits), but as a starter to a possibly awesome car....
Like others have said, your Jetta is available by the ton on CL. Had your Jetta been a 1st or 2nd gen. model, THEN it would have been a tough decision.
I'd say do it and then you can change your screen name to UN-RustyRabbit.
