yeah, that thing was killing me. there was a reason it had to go!
From my stint at the 'Yota place, second the crappy ride complaints. Otherwise, typical boringly reliable plain vanilla Toyota.
The only thing I saw with them was some cars would eat transmissions, they had a really hard shift. That's VIN specific and there was a recall which was basically an extended warranty, IIRC it was for 10 years/170,000 miles. No repairs would be done unless the problem was actually occuring. Worth calling the local snoozebox dealer with the VIN to see if this one's involved.

Yeah my wife having off-road ability is very scary to me. The last time she had one off-road worthy I came home to a tree stuck in a skid plate, not a limb a tree.

Bobzilla, did you ever find out why you had cat problems? That's a symptom of over-fueling or misfires. Fix the root cause, and the problem would go away..... This is something that could happen on any modern vehicle, FWIW.
It was likely a bad ECU. Never diagnosed until we traded it in. They went to find out why the CEL was on, again (I think this car thought it wasa VAG product, that light never went off), and the computer just stopped communicating with the Toyota scanner. Like... "Screw you I am done" stopped.
That was the best guess anyway. Of course, with it being a manual trans, sitting on the highway at 75mph was 4300rpms. she would take it twice a year to Tucson from Indy and back.... 28-30 hours straight through of 4krpms+ probably wasn't good on the cat I'm guessing. After the car got run through the used car inspection, and the parts list was just short of $9k to make it safe again, it was promptly shipped off to auction never to be seen again.
