Ask what Mama Poop wants in a car. I bought my first automatic so Mrs Clownkiller didn't have to shift. What makes her happy makes life easy. I get to drive whatever crap I want!

91 acura integra. 33 mpg all day erry day. 80 miles/day.
Mommymobile. Who the berkeley cares? 20 miles/day in trips to grocery store/park/library.
Mazdaspeed 3 as a 3 person hauler? Never happen. Definitely not with a baby carrier in the center, and FOR SURE, not with a recaro baby seat in it. You totally can't fit a stroller, diaper bag, a load of groceries, an RC car and a few tool sets in the hatch at the same time.
Not gonna work. Nope.
But wait.....

Is that? That's definitely a small child, and no matter what I try to say, everyone thinks he's mine.

Certainly looks like......

Under all that filth, I believe it's a Mazdaspeed3!

That looks like a stroller in the trunk. And some jackstands. And my RC car. And a small person wanting to play with said RC car.

Oh hey look, a car seat! Funny how that works out.

And a small person, exiting a car seat rather rapidly.
Beyond all my sarcasm, I think it's a great family car. I've seen 30+ on the highway, though realistically I average about 26mpg right down due to a chronic case of foot-to-floor syndrome. Easy to work on, fast stock, even faster modified, tons of airbags to make the little lady happy.... it's all there.
Uhhh... Mazdaspeed 5 swap obviously.

Don't know if it's relevant, but the other day I was filling up the F350 and a really hot 25ish chick pulls up to the pump on the other side of me. She was driving a red Speed 3 with a long surfboard strapped to the roof. We had a conversation for several minutes about her car. She loved it, and highly recommended I get one for the misses.
I don't see the problem with the ms3 other than the harsh ride. I've never bought into the whole, 'you need a big car' American point of view. Family of three here, admittedly with a now 12 year old (18 YO has moved out). We do the school run for 3 7-8th graders in a Mustang convertible and are currently on 4, 500 mile multi state vacation in the C30, we went camping a month ago in the Mustang.
Before I moved here frothy UK we used too tease a friend who got a big car once he had 2 young kids. The big car? A Peugeot 306 GTI. What's a 306, the much smaller sibling to the 309 sold here.
Personal taste and Michigan roads. BAck in 07/08 when it came out I was 110% convinced I was getting an MS3, right up until the test drive. 2 miles was enough to tell me it was way too harsh for a DD on Mi roads. Got the Volvo instead and never ever regreted it.
I totally agree, you don't need a car bigger than a MS3 for two kids, so long as both aren't toddlers.
Be that as it may, sliding doors are the bees' knees.
Looking back, I wish I got a MS3 instead of my regular ol' 3. They are awesome. You won't get the same mileage as the Fit, but it's bigger and WAY more fun to drive. Fellow GRM'er MA$$Hole used to have a 2008 with a simple Cobb Accessport stage 1 tune, and it would embarrass my 2009 WRX.
It also once embarrassed a Jaaaaaaaaaaag S-Type R with 3 dudes in the MS3 on a VERY hot day. The look on the Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag Driver's face was absolutely priceless.
If you care about gas mileage, just get a SkyActiv 3 5-door. They modeled the manual transmission feel after the Miata, so you know it's good.

And, if you start doing things like intake, TIP, ported intake mani, catless 3" exhaust, and you get your AP race on- oh yeah.
She wants an ms3- she just doesn't know it yet. It's obvious Mrs. Shovel has no problem with a manual, as he was looking at a mz5 with a manual....so it's a matter of how much room she needs. I can't imagine the space constraints in an ms3 to be any worse than in a Fit.... and the trans in the ms3 is STUPID strong.
