Most of this thread is nonsense, but I'm not sure how C5Z06 and WRX and 1989 Civic Si are not answers.
In reply to ProDarwin:
One of those is an incredible value and the other two are over-priced, understeering pigs.

The C5 understeers?
Maybe I should specify: STC prepped '89 Si. There are many WRXs worth owning, none stock though.
In reply to mazdeuce:
As much as I loved the 964 I didn't have the sweat equity in it that I had in the M3. When you spend years making a race car then sell it before you go racing... it's a bitter pill. Especially when the guy who bought it came damn close to winning a national championship with it. Sadly... he also dashed it into the pit wall at triple digits sliding in someone else's oil in the bridge turn at NJMP this summer. A total loss. So... silver linings - my first cage build was a success! He was uninjured except for being unconscious.
I've given these answers a few times on various forums...
Q: I want an E30 M3 but the prices have gotten insane and I really need 4-doors.
A: Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth.
Q: Affordable daily driver that can handle heavy winter and still pass Porsches on track?
A: Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII or IX.
Q: Best RWD, manual coupe for fun daily driving and occasional track use for under $30k with financing?
A: E90 3-series or 128i through BMW's CPO program
Ultimate appliance with long range: Volt or Prius
Ultimate appliance with short range: Leaf or Volt
90s Japanese GT car that will make insane levels of power without Supra pricetag: Z32
Miata but turned up to 11: S2000
Cheapest way to carry crap+people and get good gas mileage?
I do think the BG platform cars can fulfill a lot of rallycross/beater/winter mule needs while being cheap, easy and simple.

Saturn SW2 is just as cheap & light, but with the added bonus of 36 more horsepower and a body that won't rust or dent. Its starting to become a GRM answer to "What obscenely cheap econo-wagon?" threads.

No. That was kind of my point.
See also: My suggestions for the "other" answers on the previous page. Not that the Civic or WRX are bad cars, but as far as VALUE, for a driver's car, I can't think of a better car than the C5 Z06.
Not "the answer" per se but given the following on GRM worth 'honorable mention'.
AMC Eagle 4X4: not an XJ by any means but for what it is, it does well. Rapidly becoming extinct tho.
S197: With prices coming down, earlier and higher mileage models are becoming more reasonable. Good performance base to start with and a huge aftermarket. Never be a Coyote killer but for the money it's a fun car for sure.
Volt: Well acclaimed here, if the price was just right tho.
Cruze: My wildcard. If the turbo motors hold up I might see this as future Saturn love down the road. Loved the '15 I just drove. Be a great commuter car. Like to test out the diesel.

This is also true.

And that's why I just put this together:
Excellent so far after the manual swap.
