Well my super-secret AMC deal fell through (again, for like the 3rd time since April) but another fell in my lap. It's a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII. It's Black/Black with the DOHC version of my P71's 4.6. The airbags work, but the interior is trashed, the paint is trashed (and rolled on over battle-scars that would put a LeMons car to shame), and the thing overheats. Also it's on T-Bird wheels (which are the wrong offset, so they rub inboard) and 1 donut (the 4th normal tire has a chunk of angle iron stuck in it! ).

Don't get me wrong, it might have potential (straight, no rust, moonroof, all the electrics work, ~120K miles) but I'm finding clean local ones for $1500. This one is priced at $500 and the seller has already agreed to at least $300. I'm thinking more like $200 and then I'll strip the thing (the airbags gotta be worth some coin, and then I'll have a DOHC and a spare 4R70W!).

Advice from the peanut gallery?

Airbags ain't worth what they used to be unless you have local laws that make them otherwise. $30 each tops. That said-DO IT!

$300 for a DOHC motor and trans? Should this even be a question?

All I know is the Mark VIII electric radiator fan is one of the best electric fans period, OEM or aftermarket.

Mind selling it to me if it works? My poor RX-7 is in need of some extra cooling capacity at the moment...

First year though, and an over-heater at that.

Sounds like a box of E36M3 with no real purpose in your already "interesting" stable of automobiles.

Sounds like it is too far gone. Save your cash and find one in better shape, they are still inexpensive cars.

I got to agree with the previous two posts.

Well shoot, it followed me home!

It's a 93 Lincoln Mark VIII. DOHC 4.6L V8, 4R70W trans, Leather, power everything, moonroof, chrome wheels, black on black, and even has a car phone ! 129K miles, clean title, current plates, 2 sets of keys, keyless and alarm works, all of the electronics work, and it starts right up. Air shocks work and hold air just fine, trans shifts great, engine revs out to redline, and it even has a 1-year old rack & pinion (to the tune of $400).

Drove it home and it never got hot, no leaks from the engine bay, fan comes on. This thing has some power! Maybe I should swap the motor into the P71...

Oh, and $250 so I really can't lose

$250, for (to me) the most attractive car ever made, and it only has an over heating problem that you have yet to encounter...

I almost dropped $3500 on one 2 years ago.

Jealousy does not even come close to how I feel right now. Nice score.

That'a a steal! I had a friend with a really clean one few years ago, it was a nice cross between a luxo barge and a GT car. Nice score!

In reply to Buzz Killington:

At first I thought he was saying it is the most attractive $250 car. Of course, that probably isn't true either but would be slightly less ambitious.

Yes, I am that sick. I fell in love with them when I was 14.

If a cross-crountry road trip was not involved... Breath deep, walk away, breath deep, walk away...

How much is a one way plane ticket? Would it hold up to a drive back to NY?

Never liked the seats in those cars- had one for a evaluation weekend, and just couldn't get comfortable. They are fast cars- with all the limiters off, and set to the lowest height, I think one cleared 180mph on the Salt Flats.

I think there are some good ways to lighten the car- seats and wheels being high priority.

No idea why they may overheat.... never really followed them once they went into production- since that was just one year after I started working here.

If you do the swap, check the subframes, too- it's a pretty decent independant suspension- much lighter than the equal T-Bird.

Nice score...especially for that price. Most of the sub 1K ones here are slammed/tinted and ghetto.

I always thought that they were very elegantly styled cars.

Tickets are about $250 (I'm flying 1-way TO NYC this week!) and I think it would hold up. I gotta chase down the overheating (if there is even a problem) and replace a tire.

I always liked the looks, very classy, especially in black.

I like the way this thread was titled. Not P71's potential next car purchase, but P71's next potential car purchase. I would call this a potential car for sure

She was sold about 20 minutes after this picture for $650. Yes, that's a $400 profit in 36 hours.

NEXT!!!!!

I really like those older lincoln's they look like great highway cruisers. Great looking car, I like it!

I hear they made a 5.0 version of the p71 in mercury trim for high speed pursuits.
