Painting With Tape?

I came across this on the internet. Some guy changed his 3-Series color from black to white with 3M shiny white tape.

I saw this on another web board.

Same deal as that shrink-on vinyl graphic stuff that businesses do their company cars with.

I wonder how it'll look over time--if it gets chalky or what.

I think it would be great for a winter car, although it's a helluv an expensive way to preserve a paintjob.

Sweet idea/execution, though.

there was a thread on the VW boards about some guys who did it to an Audi then drove coast-to-coast

The link tommy posted is actual 3m type Vinyl. I am / was tempted to do it on my challenge car , but it seems like quite the process for a 2 man team.

The Vinyl from Suppliers (here in canada anyway) is about $1.50 a Sq Ft. The local "trim line 3M" store wanted $7 a sq ft.. I went to the supplier (NDgraphics.com) and got it cheap.

I did a masking project with it recently , works great, they even make a white with a gray back so that it is less translucent.

any dust / dirt underneath shows up

If the tape is on there long enough, I wonder if the paint will come ripping off when someone tries to remove the tape.

This is vinyl--not tape. No adhesive, AFAIK.

I'd assume you remove it w/ a heat gun.

Wasn't there a thread on this on the old board? Someone doing a P71 Vic? Bueller?

Anybody have a good US source for this material? And maybe a how-to? My bike would look wicked in [fill in the color I'm lusting after this month].

can you get a checkerboard pattern ?

its the same as doing a graphic wrap. the vinyl comes off with heat and a little elbow grease. the adhesive comes off with citrus based cleaner/degreaser. I've worked with vinyl for 13 years, and that would be a PITA!

No, summer vacation. I am interning at the office.

My work-partner has a dark green SAAB 900 convertible. She likes my white Miata and thinks it's a better colour for convertible cars. So, earlier this year, she had been considering getting the SAAB painted white or trading it in on a white soft-top.

Otherwise, it's a perfect SAAB.

Her husband is in the vinyl graphics business, and about 3 months ago he covered the car with vinyl, just like some of the other examples here. It didn't cost him anything and she knew he could always remove it if it didn't look so great.

When she showed it to me, I thought it was painted! It looks great (but up-close, not perfect). I saw it yesterday and, so far, it seems to be wearing well.

Did anyone find a good place to buy from in the US online? I'm afraid my purchase abilities are limited to google searches and ebay. Most of the ebay stuff is 12" wide which would be a pain to match up.

Yeah, that was me. I am re-doing the parts that I really messed up. I don't think I was using enough heat. Anyway, my vinyl was Oracal brand, not 3M. Maybe I'll try this next time.

I so want that on my Bullitt . . .I wonder how much that will cost for the entire job on my car :-/

If I still lived in Florida, I think I would get this done for "love-bug" season. All that you would have to do is the hood, maybe the top, and the leading edges of the fenders and bumper.
